Implants make Foobs Cold!
Ok.....the weather has turned cold now, and I've noticed especially at bed time when bra is off, that foobs are very cool to the touch. Actually, they're cold! This really bothers me! No tells you to expect things like this after the surgery. I had implants placed in March. Anyone know why this happens and is there anything you can do about it except sleep in a bra or sweater!?!?!? ha!

I never thought about that, but I guess if the implant area is close to the skin it makes a certain amount of sense? What kind of reconstruction did you get? I'd imagine a silicone or saline implant would be more likely to have this issue than a recon using your own tissue?
Good luck with it!

I didn't even think about this until I read a similar post on this forum. Then when I felt my foobs before getting into the shower I noticed they *were* cooler than the rest of my chest! But because I have no feeling there I don't notice it. Also I live in Australia so I don't have to worry about getting frostbite...most of the time!
I also noticed that when I jump in a pool, that initial shock of cold is much less than it was pre-mx. I used to be such a wimp jumping into a pool or the ocean. I didn't realize until now how sensitive our breasts are to the cold and probably how much heat they used to carry.
I also notice that when I get really cold my chest 'shivers' and I feel like I have 'dancing boobs'...very weird! I found those quilted vests to be great in winter.
Generally it's not a problem though as I think the difference in temperature is relative so that if the rest of your body is warm, the foobs will probably be slightly cooler, that's all. But if the rest of your body is cold then you may need to protect the foobs so they don't get too cold. But like I said, my foobs certainly let me know if they need warming up!! :-)
-
Well, there is no circulation in foobs. All the heat they get is radiated from the chest wall.
Mine gets a chill when I drink something cold. What a treat! LOL
-
Oh, yeah, the ice boobs. I got 'em, too. I have to wear a warm cami when hiking in the snow, to keep my core warm.
I remember my saline implants stayed toasty, but the saline warmes up with body heat. Silicone is too dense. Fortunately, I have no feeling in these foobs. So if my crazy hubby decides he wants to warm his cold hands somewhere on my body, I make him use the foobs! (Get a little squeeze action out of that, ya know!)

Thanks for the input! Glad I'm not the only one!
AnneW----interesting point about the saline vs. silicone....I think you're right about that! Saline would warm up more with the body. My implants are silicone.
I haven't turned on our heater yet....when I'm laying in bed I can feel the cold implants against my chest, and it makes my whole body colder. Its' also embarrassing if hubby goes to touch them and their cold!
-
Yep, I have cool boobs. It's feels strange when the rest of my body is so warm! The first time I felt the coldness, I had my husband to feel them too. I told him that if he ever needs to cool down just grab a boob!
-
Dancing boobs! LOL! Yes, I have them when I'm cold, and it's very uncomfortable. And I get that sensation from drinking my morning smoothies -- instead of brain freeze, it's boob freeze!
-
Yep, I just noticed this one. It does stay chilly. I notice you can warm it right up with your hands or hubby's hands
I had a lat flap, but that did not make the foob, they used it to construct an internal bra then I have a foob also.
Tina, I noticed that also, with a cold drink. First time it happened I felt like one of the skeleton pirates from the Pirates of the Caribean movie, where they drink and it goes right out again.
Too weird! Ah, the joys of foobs. Have a nice day ladies.

When I first had the cold drink experience a day or 2 after my surgery, I thought something had happened to my esophagus (the tube going to your stomach). It felt as though it had dilated to the width of my chest! Very bizzare. When I told my ps he was fascinated and said several of his patients had felt the same thing but he had no idea why it happened. He thought it had something to do with the nerves being cut and the raw ends of the nerves being stimulated. I think he may be right because now that I'm 6 months out from the surgery I don't notice it.
I love the skeleton pirate analogy!
-
The feeling is so odd, mine are cold also when the rest of my body is warm. The oddest feeling is when I drink something cold I feel like it is running down my chest.
-
I was so thrilled to see this thread, I thought I was the only one with cold boobs! I had by bi-lat on Oct 29th with tissue expanders, I have had two fills so far. I noticed when I go into the grocery store around the freezer section my boobs seize up and my whole body gets really cold, such a strange senstation! and drinking something cold is so odd too. Everyday brings something new, such a crazy journey......

My daughter's ice dancing instructor had bilateral mastectomies and reconstruction with silicone implants. Because she earns her living by being on the ice with her students, she says her chest area (implants) are always cold and she wishes someone had taken her occupation into consideration and warned her about the cold foobs. She doesn't feel that the silicone implants were the best choice for her.
-
I have 2 silicone implants. Now that it is cold at night, I have trouble falling asleep because I get so cold getting into my jammies that I'm shivery. It's not very sexy to climb into bed in a sweatshirt is it? When we were in Hawaii, I loved the snorkeling but had to periodically swim hard to stay warm. My dh just floated around, not cold at all! When I work out, I end up sweaty. As I begin to cool down, my boobs start getting cold even though I still feel warm. It is so weird when my boobs are cold to the touch. Makes me feel like a lizard who needs to sit in the sun. I have a friend with silicone cosmetic implants and she says hers get cold too. It's definately something I never heard about before my surgery!
-
it's interesting that you feel the cold. Do you have other feeling in your foobs? like touch or warmth? Mine are completely numb so I only notice that they are cool if I touch them
-
I only have feeling in a 1/2" strip between my boobs. It's been a year since my exchange and the feeling hasn't returned so I don't think it ever will. Don't know if I'll ever be used to it! I can feel in some of my armpit, 18 months after the lymph nodes were taken out. I get cold easier now and after feeling how cold my boobs get (to the touch) I think that's why.
-
OMGosh! I thought I was the ONLY one and I thought I was imagining it!!!! My boobies are cold too!!!!! I have silicone and I was gonna ask my PS about it but forgot. I will try to rem to ask next week.
I am so glad I am not crazy!
-
I am so glad I am not the only one with this sensation. I live in MN and am quite active outdoors. The first time I went for a walk outside in the cold and then came in to take my shower, I noticed how cold my foobs were by my upper arm brushing up against them. I am now constantly aware of it and it's quite annoying. I, too, get the chest-shivers if I am someplace that is cold (like the dairy section of the grocery store). Silicone can't freeze, can it? Wouldn't that be something? Ha!

I have one word to combat ice pack Foobs.... SmartWool!!! I have had a terrible time keeping my core warm since my surgery/reconstruction in October. I bought a SmartWool camisole and baselayer crewneck last month and I LIVE in them. No more cold foobs. SmartWool is made of a fine gauge merino wool that doesn't itch against my skin. The cami has a nice added benefit of covering discretely my healing incisions so they don't show through my tops (my trunk is still too sensitive to wear a bra or jogbra). I highly recommend these to keep you warm.
-
While at times, my foob is cold to the touch, it certainly doesn't make ME cold. I wouldn't even know it was cold unless I touched it. My augmented side has never 'felt' cold that I'm aware of. My recon. side also holds the heat from a shower or hot bath for quite awhile (hours) afterward. Again, it doesn't effect my body temp but if I touch it, it feels warm to the touch. Best wishes
-
Ladyredlocks - What brand/ where did you get the smartwool cami? I googled but did not find any hits. Thanks
-
I haven't been walking/jogging since it turned cold and started snowing (we have subzero temps a lot in winter) partly b/c of my expanders - and partly b/c I don't want to fall down on the ice and deflate a foob! I read somewhere that it's hard to keep foobs warm and some runners have posted that they wear extra layers on their core, like fleece vests over a wicking fabric and then a warm jacket. It's unnerving to think my foobs could get frostbite! But I do have feeling on the skin, which makes me more aware of their temperature. It is also extra weird to touch them as I am very aware of the expander inside. Plus there is more internal pain involved - I can feel discomfort when I press on the fill - port and on the bumpy edges. I guess numbness has its advantages!
-
I found my first SmartWool cami at REI three weeks ago in the womens long underwear area, I found more on eBay (my REI only had black). SmartWool is the brand name.
What worked for me to keep the foobs warm so I could play outside (we got a record 18 inches of snow over christmas and the hill in front of my house became a sled run - who could resist!!!) was a merino wool cami, a merino wool long sleeve base layer, a regular sweater and my outdoor coat (fleece pants on the bottom). I ran the hill for a couple hours before my expander muscle spasms made me quit (bummer). I was sore for a couple days - but it was worth it to laugh and scream like that again.
-
Thanks Labyredlocks - I orders some for REI and am waiting for them to arrive. Will order more from ebay after I decide if I like (can't normally return ebay stuff!)
BYW - LOVE your hair! Mine is red also - but so straight.
-
Ladyredlocks - That's a great suggestion. I am only at the tissue expander stage, but I love to winter hike and play in the snow. So far I have found the tightening muscle bit to be a real problem. I try to wear extra layers over my chest and never go outside w/ my coat unzipped. I also avoid ice cream and sherbert unless I am sitting by the wood stove. My husband and I have joked that I will use handwarmers on my boobs when we return to winter hiking and camping. I will have to check out those smart wool camis at REI. Thanks. - Jean

My Salines (as AnneW) Said are very warm...All the time. I can warm my Ice cold hands on them. (wow I have 1 good benefit from my Crappy Chest)
I will be switching to Silicone. I know I wont like the cold chest.
It is freezing here in MN. (hense the built in hand warmers are nice) But when I am cold I tense. Makes my Chest Muscles so Tight & tense they contact constantly- Drives me crazy.

I have saline implants and they are cool to the touch at times. And I to get the tight chest muscles quivering in the cold and it does feel very funny. My dh thinks it's a hoot that I get cold boobs and 'offers' to warm them up but he just wants to make them go 'wooshie-wooshie-wooshie' and drive me crazy.

So glad I found this even though it's been nearly two years since the last post. My foob drives me crazy in the cold weather, very uncomfortable. Yay I'm not alone.
-
Freezer Foobs, oh great something else I get to look forward too. I still have TEs and in the middle of chemo. Maybe I'll design some foob warmers for next winter.
-
Hello I just had to have sylicone put In after 9 years with salinte and after he took off the bandages and a few days
later I felt that my foobs were so so very cold not like the others. And no I was not told of this either. I will be going
to the dr. on thurs of next wk and will ask of course. Also as you said do not know why they do not tell you these
things only It would just prob. worry us more for sure. Thank God we are still alive and on one other post the cold
just absolutely hurts bad. But If I dring something hot directly seems to warm up the Inside and they eventually do
not spasm as bad. Another thing that we did not know but on a good note If we had known all of this would It have
really really mattered lol. Please add your comments If you wish and I so love this website. It does help up all so much
Stay well all or get well soon ok Happy Holidays to all on the board

I had my exchange in November with silicone. The cold really bothers me a lot. It may be the worst thing about them besides the radiation on one side and not having nipples. I mean it all really stinks and I'd take my old boobs back in a second without Cancer of course. But the cold is so unexpected and it really really annoys me. My Plastic doc said it only happens to some people when I asked him how come I wasn't warned. He said there's no way of telling who it will happen to. Lucky me again I guess:
