Hi All,

I've just been diagnosed and will most likely be starting chemo after the new year.  I'm in the DC metro area and haven't the slightest idea of where to go for wigs.  I'll be researching on my own, but would love other opinions.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Beth

American cancer Society has a wig "store". It's free and they usually have a large selection. Merle Norman carries the Racquel Welch line of wigs but I have found them to be expensive. You can go in and try on wigs to see which style you like and then purchase it on line!

There are several online places to purchase but sometimes it's difficult not to be able to try them on first.  I actually purchased 3 of them, drove to a place an hour from my home for 2 of them and ordered 1 online from Revlon Wigs.  The one I got online was the cheapest and the one I liked the best, it was closest to my natural look.  It also had the mono-scalp cap ( i think that's what it's called) where it looks like a natural scalp.  Only thing with those ones is that you have to have a bald head, or nearly bald for them to fit right.  Once your hair starts growing in pretty thick, it's hard to keep it in place.

    Good Luck.....Judy

Call your hairdresser and ask her.

They often work with wigs. We got one at a nice shop in Wheaton MD. A good many African American women will own a wig as a bad hair day strategy so I know there are a lot of good wig shops around.

That said, nobody I know has ever really liked their wig very well so I wouldn't spend too much for it. You'll probably end up in scarves or hats.

Dear Beth: Here is a source for really nice wigs. Eivind did a wig fashion show with BC survivors at one of my cancer luncheons, and people are still talking about it.

    Good luck!
