Help at home with health care

Options

My mom was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer that has spread to her bones about a month ago.  I live about an 1.5 hours away and am not able to "live" with here while she goes through Chemo, etc.

I am really worried because she is very disoriented from the medication and she is all by herself.  Does anyone have advice about hiring someone to come in to check on her daily - to make sure she is eating/drining, etc?

This has all been a tremendous shock and I am over loaded with questions, worry, etc.  Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Check with the hospital social services dept....they should be able to help her. Also talk to her doctor or nurse, theymight also have some suggestions.

Suzanne, in addition to the hospital social services and her doctors' offices,  you can check the blue pages of her phone book for potential services, including visiting nurses and getting meals delivered etc.  Does she have friends/neighbors who can take turns helping out if you are concerned about non-medical support?

Have you considered the possibility of having her stay with/near you during treatment?  If she is not trying to work through treatment, she may be able to get chemo at a facility near you, and have you available to help her.  Even if living with you isn't an option, an extended stay hotel/motel facility, or short term rental apartment might let her eat and spend time with you, but still have her own "place".

Thank you for your suggestions.  I will check with her doctors to see if they have any suggestions.  I am trying to convince her to move close to me in an apartment that is very close to my home, but she is not cooperating yet.  I will continue to work on her.

Again, thank you for the guidance!
