Hi all,

My surgeon recommended an MRI after my 6 mos. f/u after a biopsy for calcs. B9 but had atypia. They called today to set up MRI and had to be scheduled around  my period. Now I am not sure of the exact date of my last period.  I am so scared that If I go when my breasts are sore, I will get alot of false negs.  What should I do?  Is it ok right after the period or is there a guideline for exact days of the cycle?

    Shabby,

    This is from http://www.medscape.com/:

"Timing of the MRI and the Menstrual Cycle

The ideal time for MRI of the breast is approximately between day 5 and 15 of the menstrual cycle, because the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle with the associated increase in estrogen and progesterone leads to the stroma being edematous with development of the lobules. This leads to increased enhancement during the luteal stage of the menstrual cycle, with the enhancement being maximal 7 days before menstruation. Therefore, breast MRI should not be performed during this time, but rather, between day 5 and 15, long enough after the luteal phase to decrease any residual enhancement."

    Hope that helps!

    Hi Karen,

I think I got my period on oct. 28th or 29th. usually a 7 day period and they want to schedule me for dec. 8th. Is that ok?

It depends on how long your cycle is. If Day 1 was 10/28, then Day 28 would be 11/24, + 5 to 15 days would be 11/30 - 12/10, so it is right near the end. If your cycle is less than 28 days, that might be a bit late, but if 28 or more days, then right in the target zone.

You might want to schedule it for the 8th and ask if they can easily move the date forward if need be.

I think if you do it in the 5-15 range, you get rid of more false positives due to hormones...

I had my first MRI while I had my period and the whole right side of my breast lit up!. I then had many mammograms and ultrasounds on that area trying to find something which was not there, THEN I had another MRI which was suppose to be an MRI  guided biopsy seeing they COULD NOT detect that area any other way. When I went for the MRI biopsy I didnt have my period and the area didnt light up again so biospy was canceled. Doctors said it COULD have been hormones but they dont know for sure. Big huge scary false positive!! so defintley dont do it when you have your period.
