migraines????

Anyone one meds for them?  I'm seeing the neurologies on the 28th about my migraine auras that unfortunately moved into including the actual migrain on friday (yuck yuck yuck and the word that rhymes with it).  Not that I think I'll go on meds for sure or anything but I'm just wondering what's out there.  A friends of mine's daughter is on anti-depressents for it.  Anyone?  Funny cuz I just got off mine.  And now a small part is wondering if being on them was keeping them at bay but as I weaned off they came on.  I'll be bringing that up with him.

any thoughts would be great!

I used to take meds for migraines.  After suffering with them since my early teens, they quite suddenly stopped a year ago.

Until then I was on Zomed (I think that was the name).  It worked great and I only took a pill with the onset of a migraine.  Before Zomed, I took beta blockers on a daily basis as a preventative but disliked how they made me feel.  The Zomed worked much better with minimal SEs

I have migraines but don't take preventative meds for them.  I take Relpax at onset and have found that this particular triptan drug leaves me with fewer side effects than the others, although Zomed worked well, too.  My niece has migraines and her doctor put her on Topomax as a preventative and she said it worked wonderfully to prevent her headaches, but she had to stop taking it when she decided to try to become pregnant.

I take Imitrex for migraines (one pill at the first sign of an aura, repeat after two hours if necessary). It works very well for me -- I would say about 80% of the time the migraine vanishes in thin air. I rarely need to take the second pill.

Hi Jill,

 I have been getting a migraine once or twice a month now for the last four years or so.  They are terrible, and I can really empathise with anyone who has them.  Anyway, I take Imitrex for mine also.  It works better if I take as soon as I realize it is a migraine.  I take the pill, lay down in my dark, quiet bedroom for an hour with a cold washcloth on my forehead, and it usually goes away.  If not, my doc gave me something called ketoprofen (I think) which is an anti-inflammatory, and I take one of those, if after two hours, the headache is not gone.  I have found that lack of sleep, any alcohol whatsoever (which really sucks!), or stress (nervousness) brings them on.  There is a new drug out called Trexima (I think?) which is a combination of Imitrex and naproxen that I think I am going to ask my doctor for.  I have considered the Topomax also.  I do kind of live in fear of the next migraine so if it gets any worse, I think I will try the Topomax as a preventative.  Good luck to you!

I was getting migraines pretty frequently until I started chemo-ironiclly, after the first 2 AC treatments I didn't get migraines for over a year (they just started up again, but not as bad as they used to be). I was on Topomax, 50mg, twice a day as prevention, and if I got a migraine, I gave myself an imitrex injection, which worked better than anything I've ever taken in 30 years of migraines. Migraines are the WORST. I hope you find something that gives you relief.

I'm now on Maxalt and it works, but is not a preventative drug.  However, my insurance co. will only pay for so many over a 60 day period and it seems I have more headaches than Maxalt.  My fam. doctor prescribed Fioracet (sp?) and now am using less Maxalt.  The Fioracet will work if taken at the first sign of the headache.

Headaches SUCK big time and I've had them for years.

Thanks everyone.  I've gotten headaches since I was young but this aura thing is all new.  It started after I had open heart surgery last April (yes I've talked to everyone! so now the neurologiest).  Friday was the the first time a massive headache followed the aura.  Usually it was nothing or a very minor headache that left pretty quick with water and Excedrin Migraine.  I'm hoping Friday was a fluke.
