Re: Menlatoni and Thyroid problem

Options

I want to take menlatoni for prevention of breast cancer and a good sleep.  There is one thing in the label bothering me. It says if you have thyroid problem, consult your physician before taking it.  I don't have thyroid problem per my blood test, but I do have a thyroid nodule, because every new doctor I see I got tested to make sure everything is ok.

 I want to ask menlatoni is not good to your thyroid?

I want to take additional iodine also.

     I googled melatonin and thyroid and found several sites that claim melatonin may increase the production of thyroid hormone in some women. If someone is taking supplemental (synthetic) thyroid hormone or has been diagnosed as hyperthyroid, this could be a problem. Too much thyroid hormone can cause lots of symptoms. The site referenced below was rather nicely written and the page has a lot of info if you'd like to read it. Otherwise, here's the main point:

    If you take too much melatonin, you may experience the following effects:

    * Drowsiness upon arising
    * Wild, not just vivid, (bad) dreams
    * An excess of the thyroid hormone (T3), resulting in waking up nervous, sweating, and with palpitations
    * Decreased estrogen and progesterone levels. If melatonin excites instead of calms, this may indicate a hormone imbalance in women. Inositol at low doses (650mg, which is contained in 3 tbsp of lecithin) at bedtime may help.
