Hey mke!!!  You didn't say if you had any other treatments besides surgery.  Did you have radiation with either of your lumpectomies??  Did your Dr.(s) advise you to have the BRAC test???  I'm trying to decide if I want to have the BRAC test done.  I'm having a lumpectomy next week and my onc says I need to decide soon as the BRAC test will take about 4 weeks.  If it is positive she wants me to have a double mast. instead of radiation.  She dosen't want me to have rads if I'm am even remotely thinking of having reconstructive surg.  We have to wait about a month after the surgery before starting rads, and if I have the test done soon, we won't have to put off the rads longer than necessary if the result is negative.

    Mary,

I was in the same boat regarding the BRCA test -> bilateral mastectomies versus radiation for my lumpectomy.  Lots of bc and other female-hormone cancers in my family back 3 generations.  I got the test done last week - it may not all be covered by insurance, but it was worth the peace of mind, one way or another.  It was supposed to take 2 weeks for the results, but the results came back a week early - NEGATIVE!

In my case, if it were positive, my two daughters in their 20s would have had to start MRI surveillance for breast cancer now.  The result was a relief for all of us.  So go for it...it may not be what you think!
