Hey, Beth...
We did a small piece on it last month in the magazine. It looks pretty neat! Did you design a bra?
-
Beth, that does sound like a lot of fun.

Some of the bras I've seen blew me away-- the one with actual china teacups and saucers on the cups of the bra, with an actual tea bag and the look of a tea stain in the cup was just amazing.
Another one I saw, the artist painted the bra and then ironed on photos of her father who died from cancer.
I'm not designing a bra- just helping with the event from sponsorship to media etc...
My sister is designing one- I'll post a pic when she's finished.

Beth, this is awesome!! Last year, I got a piece into a juried art show where one of the other works was a wall sculpture of a rainbow made entirely of scrunched up bras of all sorts of colors that were attached by ribbons to this canvas-covered board. I definitely wanna make something to submit. I'll post a pic if I do. Kathi

C-cup bra as symbol for fundraiser at Adelphi
- BY RHODA AMON | mailto:rhoda.amon@newsday.com&subject=C-cup%20bra%20as%20symbol%20for%20fundraiser%20at%20Adelphi
- October 19, 2008
When Adelphi art professor Dale Flashner was looking for ideas for a fundraising art show, this thought came to her: What could be a more appropriate symbol for beating breast cancer than an exquisitely decorated or flamboyant size 36 C-cup bra? And so Creative Cups was born.
"We're using the bra as a blank canvas," Flashner said. "It can have a theme or statement or it can just be decorative."
Everyone is invited to submit a bra.
"You don't have to be an artist, you just need a bit of inspiration."The requirement is that you start with a new size 36 C-cup, underwired and padded bra, give it a title and accompany your submission with a typed statement of 250 words or less about what inspired the creation. Entries must be received by Nov. 1 to be entered in an exhibition and auction. It's not a competition.
Bras to go on display
The decorated bras will be on exhibit in the Ruth S. Harley University Center on the Adelphi University campus in Garden City and will be auctioned at a reception on March 19.
Proceeds will benefit the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program.
Bras have been pouring in from all over the country, Flashner said. "People have been transforming the bras into works of art."
The bras are hand-painted, dyed, embellished with beads, jewelry, plastic cups and saucers. Every inch of the bra, including backs and straps, must be decorated. Perishable decorations are not allowed.
The accompanying statements have been heartfelt descriptions of an individual's own experience or dedications to a close friend or relative, said Flashner, who heads the Graphic Design Studio in Adelphi's art and art history department.
One of the early entries showed a spider on a floral design, the creation of Alice Sprintzen of Syosset. An artist who teaches jewelry-making, she purchased an armful of bras at the bargain price of $6 to $7 and brought them to a meeting of the Long Island Crafts Guild to get members started. Her own bra creation, she said, is dedicated to her cousin, Abbey Bilinski of Massapequa, a breast cancer survivor.
Not all the bras are user-friendly.
Angela DiPietra of Elmont, a breast cancer survivor, is at work on a whimsically unfriendly bra she calls Brazilla. The bra has sandpaper scales and is saying, "I pinch, I bite, I'll rub you the wrong way."
DiPietra, 39, a massage therapist, had a double mastectomy in 2006. "The only good thing about it is I don't have to wear a bra anymore," she said.
The experience changed her life. She's now studying at Nassau Community College to become an oncology nurse. "I want to help other cancer patients," DiPietra said.
Entertaining underwear
By contrast, Beth Tenser, co-founder with Flashner of the Creative Cups exhibit, is creating an uplifting showbiz bra called "Give My Regards to Braway."
Tenser, also 39, an Adelphi graduate and now a graphics designer in Baltimore, is trimming her entry with scenes from Playbills while the illusion of curtains falls from the straps.
"It's my gift to Long Island friends," she said. There is a $15 entry fee with each bra submission. Guidelines, a registration form and a shipping label are available on the Web site creativecups.adelphi.edu, or you can call the breast cancer hotline, 800-877-8077.
Bras can be mailed or delivered to the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program at Adelphi University School of Social Work, 1 South St., P.O. Box 701, Garden City, NY 11530-0701. -
This looks so fun! I'm an avid beader and would have loved to participate if I'd heard about it sooner. Hopefully I remember to look into it for next year!
