I'm going in the Pink Triathlon...yay!!!
I've been wanting to try a triathlon since pre-bc. How appropriate that the first one I can enter is a fundraiser for bc! I'm doing the 'baby triathlon' which is only a 200m swim, 6km cycle and 2km run. That's going to be hard for me but I just want to complete it and maybe continue training and try for longer distances. I'm 52 and not a natural athlete at all but reasonably fit for my age.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me? The event is on 26th October and I've started training.
I'm 4 months since bm and 2 months since exchange to implants and feeling good.
At this stage it takes me 15mins to run 2km and 1 min to swim 50m (then I need a rest! :-(
I haven't tried cycling yet as I don't have a bike but I do spinning classes about 2-3 times a week
I know some of you girls are athletes so any ideas gratefully received!
Farrah :-)

Sounds like fun! I did a similar tri at our Y a few years ago. Swimming was and is my most difficult event. I never learned good form, and it's a struggle. Swim a length, rest. Swim another length, rest again...
You'll do fine. Just know that your goal is to finish, so who cares about the time. Pace yourself.

I'm soooo happy! I did my first ever triathlon today! It was a mini triathlon to raise funds for breast cancer research and the focus is just on participating but I finished it and did my best and feel quite exhilarated! And after the race it occurred to me that NOT ONCE did I even notice or think about my 3 month old silicon implants!
It was a fantastic moment when I ran over the pink carpet to the finish line!!
Anne... thank you for your advice. I did what you said and didn't rush the swimming - it helped a lot. And I just paced myself with the running, a nice steady jog so I didn't need to stop or walk. I did go as fast as I could for the cycling though (on my speedy new light weight bike) and even managed to pass some people (okay, I'll be honest, they were the ones with mountain bikes and shopping baskets on back and front :-)
I think I may have the tri-bug! Woohoo!

YAY indeed for you!!! What an accomplishment! I am inspired and proud of your true grit!
I also raised funds for BC today! Local store, with Harper's Bazaar and Calvin Klein, did a mini-fashion show, with music and treats and gifts to benefit my charity, with a portion of the sales coming to us. I worked really hard carrying all those hangers and clothes to the dressing room!
My exchange is 11/13 so I am guessing as to size of finished product! I did buy a few things (mostly on sale and with a special discount) and I'm hoping others did, too, despite the awful economic downturn this week. When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping!
Or better yet, running in a Pink Triathalon! Way to go, Farrah!

Hey - that's great!
I think you're really ambitious to have signed on. I'm glad you made it through. It sounds like it was well worth it.
-
Farrah - Way to go Girl!! We are very proud of your accomplishment - you are an inspiration.
-
thank you girls! You are all an inspiration to me too! Thanks again for the encouragement :-)

Congratulations, Farrah! You are a triathlete! I love triathlon and I'm so encouraged by your experience so soon after surgery. I haven't even attempted swimming since my mastectomy: my expander feels so big and hard that when I try to fully extend my arm, it's like mashing a rock up against my ribs. One more month until I go silicone and then I'll think of you and the Pink Triathlon as my inspiration. Daffodil - thanks for raising money for research today. Now that I've been a direct beneficiary of the contributions that bc research is making, I just want to walk up to everyone who volunteers or donates and tell them it made a difference and maybe saved my life.

Daphne,
Thank you and all the best for your exchange! It will be pure bliss to get those expanders out
Hope you can get back to your swimming and triathlon soon!
Best wishes, Farrah

Thank you, Daphne! It is so nice when someone says "Thank You!" Next March will the 27th year since I founded "my" cancer luncheon! (Bad economy or not, this fashion show will go on!)
I see you have expander exchanger coming up soon; you did better than I, as my surgery was in February and I had to replace one in June. Nothing is getting in the way of this exchange~~~please! I am thinking positive pink prayers!
We look forward to hearing great things from your "transformation" too......
