I'm Confused!

Hello!

I am just a wreck!  I'm confused also.  I got the infamous callback after having a mammogram last week.  Apparently there is a change in my right breast compared to last year's mammogram-more density just under the nipple.  I have an ultrasound coming up on Monday and I need to see a breast specialist/surgeon.  The words "possible inflammatory breast cancer" also appeared on the report.  I have none of the symptoms whatsoever-no change in size, colour or texture, no itch, heat or discharge, the lymph nodes under my arm and above the collarbone are smooth.  The two breasts look exactly the same.  I am just sooo worried.  What do you think?  Have any of you had an IBC diagnosis without any symptoms whatsoever?  What else could it be?  Thank you for your time and any info you can provide.

Yes, in very early stage IBC can be seen before outward sign appear.  It was so with my wife, they  saw the increased density along with skin thickness increasing.  Since the skin getting thicker is the most common sign (80 to 90%) on IBC, that is one thing that can be seen with US.  If only seeing density increase, and not other signs such as diffused glandular inhancement it means your medical team in very on top of this,  the standard of care states if any on the symptoms are there, then IBC must be ruled out.  The odds of it not being IBC are greatly in your favor, it seems your team is getting it right and making sure.  Good luck and best wishes.

    Adriana:

My symptoms were very different I had what looked to be dermatitis along the areola. Since there was no family history of breast cancer and I was 36 years old I never had a baseline mammogram. So my pcp sent me for a mammogram and gave me a name of a breast surgeon he wanted me to see. Well the mammogram came back negative so when I saw the surgeon he did not think it was cancer but he would not know until I had a biopsy. I was suprised that the surgeon did the biopsy in his minor surgery room at his office. When the pathologist called him with the results of IBC the pathologist told him that he ran the test twice because of my age. After that things moved very fast.

Keeping my fingers crossed for b-9 results.

ibcspouse how is your wife's treatment going? Keeping you and your wife in my prays.

    Hugs

IBC is a very sneaky, and hard to diagnose disease.  By the time the surface symptoms show up i.e. orange peel skin, redness, thickening, nippple changes, the cancer can be quite progressed.  Of course we hope that yours is not IBC, but I am so glad that they are seriously investigating the changes in your breast.  I just met someone with IBC who her only symptom was a light purple bruised looking area on her breast.  When I was diagnosed, I had a baseball sized mass, redish purplish mottled thickened orange peel skin, inverted discolored nipple, very enlarged breast.  All of the signs of IBC, yet it took several doctors to finally take my worries seriously.  I pray that you don;t have IBC, but please keep us posted, and feel free to ask if you have any more questions!

Thank you so much for your responses and warm wishes!  The waiting for test results and not knowing is just so difficult, as you have all experienced.  The ironic part is, as I was telling my doctor, this is the best I have felt in so many years.  I lost 75 lbs this past year due to hard work, change of diet and exercise.   Go figure!  I am glad that my medical team is on top of things and making sure to cover all the bases.  Here's hoping for the best!  I will keep you all in my prayers!
