Being fitted for a mast. bra

Options

Hi all,

Just a simple question..

How soon after mast.surgery (mine was Sept. 10t- with 7 lymph. nodes taken out) can a woman be fitted with a mast. bra.  I haven't decided about reconstruction, but if I go that route it won't be until next year...

Thanks all

Angie

    Hi Angie,

It usually takes 4-6 weeks until you are healed up enough to be fitted with a silicone breast form and a mastectomy bra. In the interim, though, there are camisoles and soft "puffy" forms that will give you a shape--perhaps you already have those. I found wearing vests and open blouses or sweaters over tees gave me enough camouflage during that period. Now I can wear all the clothes I wore before--I like tank tops and fitted tees.

You might want to take a look at my non-profit website, BreastFree.org, for suggestions about comfortable breast forms, bras, camisoles, etc. With many forms (including a couple of silicone ones) you don't need to wear a mastectomy bra--you can just use a regular bra.

Angie, in my case, ( immediate reconstruction with expanders), I needed to appear "in public"      2 1/2 weeks after surgery. My DH drove me to a recommended shop where I was fitted with a mastectomy bra which had pouffy inserts that we "tailored" until I had a nice "presentation"!

I had swelling which made regular bras ill-fitting and uncomfortable, and the special bra accommodated that. At home, I just wore soft tees, layered as Erica suggests. If I had known about the special camisole, I would have gotten one!

    Good luck!!
