Severe reactions to anti-nausea drugs

Options

My first round of Andriamycin (80 mg) and Cytoxan (820 mg) with premedications of Amzemet (100 mg) and Decadron (20 mg) left my spacey and unable to function and barely eat any food.  I ended up getting mouth sores even thou I used salt water wash several times a day.  My Onc. told me to take Anzemet 100 mg every 12 hours, Zophran (8 mg) every 8 hours and Promethazine (generic)(25 mg) every 6 hours.  I tried for the first day, but was competely unable to function.  I ended up going to the ER on Labor Day.

I told my Onc. I would not do any more chemo treatments if I ended up in the ER again.  I'm still have severe stomach cramps and am eating lightly 7 days after first treatment.

Has anyone ever experienced this before?  Any suggestions on any anti-nausea drugs that worked for you?  I'm thin to begin with and can not afford to lose weight again.

Thanks for any help.

Debra

    Hi Debra,

The Dexamethasone put me in the ER twice. However, I had a bad reaction to it (and to the cytoxan, probably) every time I had AC chemo. Mouth sores, sure, no appetite, of course, but also inability to pee. I'd swell up like a balloon, gain 10-12 lbs in one day, and only by dosing myself with Lasix could I get things working again.

That Dexamethasone is a nasty SOB.

Hope you find a solution to this problem; I never did. Just toughed it out.

    Love,

    Annie

I didn't have an allergic reaction but Zofran did not work for me.  I felt terrible and the onco gave me Companzine instead.  It is the older version of anti-nausea meds but it worked for me.

I started with Kytril, with compazine. It didn't work. Bad headaches, dizziness and vomiting.  Not good.'

Next tx we did zophran and compazine.  Still no success...vomiting and nausea and eye problems...like I was spinning.

3rd try was charm. It was ABD, but I have no idea what all it was. I think it aloxi, benedryl and decadron, but not sure....something like that. It's a compound drug the pharmacy mixes I guess. It worked.  No problems with vomiting.

Make sure you are drinking a ton of water the day before and off tx and day after too, to flush the liver, kidneys and bladder while infusing.  Some say to suck on ice water/chips during infusion for mouth sores.  I did the biotin mouthrinse and toothpaste and no problems with mouth sores.  I did get nausea for a while untill a month after chemo was over, but it was mild.

Oh, See if they can give you the 'red devil' first. They switched it the second time and I started with problems soon after it started to infuse :(

Also, my premeds were decadron and aloxi. I think that was great, as I fine for about 12 hours each time, then the problems would start.
