Has anyone had a masectomy with reconstruction done in Victoria and if so who was your PS?

What about Calgary? Is there a surgeon or PS in Calgary that you have used and been happy with?

    Hi Elaine.

Who did you get for your oncologist here in Victoria? Just being curious....

I have IDC and had just a left mastectomy done. I talked about having  a bilateral done for the same reason as I do not want to go though this again. They seem to  not want to do it if the one breast is good. I am having chemo and radiation and I was told that if I have the radiation over a longer time (28 days) that reconstuction will be okay. They have referred me to Dr. Taylor here but I will not be getting it done until next spring. For me they suggested the reconstuction of the one removed and a reduction to the other side. I am 63 and some people don't understand why I would get recontruction at my age and my answer is I am doing it for myself and no one else!

I had Dr. Hayashi for my surgeon and he is the best. Hope I spelled his name right. Having an off time this week so not really with it.Smile

    Jill,

Thank you so much for your reply.I am still waiting for the call from the cancer center to find out when I have an appointment and with which oncologist. I have been dx with DCIS.by a surgeon in Calgary but I am now living in Victoria. I am glad you think so highly of your surgeon and that part went well for you.I am not sure if I will go with radiation of the one breast or have a bilateral masectomy with reconstruction. Thats interesting that they did not do anything to the good breast, I do understand their reason, but I guess there is part of me that just wants to do all I can to lessen further worry and put this behind me.I am certainly open to what the oncologst suggests but I also know myself and have to be comfortable with my decision.I wish you all the best and thank you fo your help. Elaine

This is a little off of topic as I am not sure as to who does reconstruction surgery in Victoria, I have been trying to get a hold of you with the private messages to see how you are doing, my replies do not seem to go through and I tried sending a new message with the same problems not sure what I am doing wrong.

    Hi Bonnie.

Sorry I didn't answer this before but was in the hospital for 11 days. My wcb hit rock bottom and then I got pneumonia and also was aenemic.I went in August 21st and came home on Sept 1st. The rad oncologist was the one to refer me to Dr. Taylor. It will be done 4-6 months after radiation. Your oncologist should be able to refer you to someone here if you are considering it.

Somehow your pm's come through with no message on it.

I had Dr. Robert Lindsay's reconstruction work done in Calgary and I was very pleased.

For anyone still interested, I believe Dr Taylor is presently the only plastic surgeon in Victoria who does breast reconstruction. He also does other types of plastic surgeries (not exclusively breasts).

My surgeon was Dr. Hayashi, back in 2003.  I opted for implant reconstruction, and chose to go to Dr. Nancy vanLaaken in Vancouver for that. Both surgeons were excellent. Dr. Taylor was new at the time. I'm sure he has more experience now.  I interviewed another plastic surgeon in Victoria, and even though he was recommended to me as an excelent surgeon, I could not deal with him. He was not prepared to show me photos of his work or a sample of the implants. I was not comfortable with him. Dr. vanLaaken was easy to deal with and I felt very comfortable with her. It felt like going shopping with a friend. If I had it all to do over again, I would try to have immediate reconstruction, but since I had radiation, that wasn't an option at the time, and probably would not be an option now.
