dog lovers
got this as an email and enjoyed it thought i would pass it along'
An older, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard; I could
> tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home
> and was well taken care of. He calmly came over to me, I
> gave him a few pats on his head; he then followed me into
> my house, slowly walked down the hall, curled up in the
> corner and fell asleep. An hour later, he went to the door,
> and I let him out. The next day he was back, greeted me in
> my yard, walked inside and resumed his spot in the hall and
> again slept for about an hour. This continued off and on for
> several weeks. Curious I pinned a note to his collar: 'I
> would like to find out who the owner of this wonderful sweet
> dog is and ask if you are aware that almost every afternoon
> your dog comes to my house for a nap.' The next day he
> arrived for his nap, with a different note pinned to his
> collar: 'He lives in a home with 6 children, 2 under
> the age of 3 - he's trying to catch up on his sleep.
> Can I come with him tomorrow?'

We live in the country and our neighbors' dog practically lives with us. She appears at 6:00am and doesn't go home until 6:30pm, presumably its her dinner time there. She is back by 8:00pm and we have to kick her out at 10:00 to go to bed. Often she will just sleep on our porch. The family moved here from the city a couple of years ago. This is their first pet. He is hardly at home and really does love the dog. However, she hates the dog and allows the kids to do whatever they want to her. It just breaks my heart. She is such a wonderful dog and they don't even know how lucky they are.

Susan, That was such cute story.
PIP, I agree with you. Sometimes people don't realize what treasures they have in their possesion. Pets are such wonderful creatures. They love unconditionally. It makes me sad when I see how some people abuse or neglect their pets.
-
I agree - cruelty to ANY kind of animal is my pet peeve! I think people don't realize that animals have feelings too!!! It just makes my blood boil when I see an animal being mistreated

If you can start the day without caffeine,
If you can get going without pep pills,
If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,
If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,
If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,
If you can overlook it when those love take it out on you, when, through no fault of your own, something goes wrong,
If you can ignore a friend's limited education and never correct him,
If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend,
If you can face the world without lies and deceit,
If you can conquer tension without medical help,
If you can relax without liquor,
If you can say honestly that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against creed, color or politics,
Then, my friend, you are almost as good as your dog.

Here is another that fits with Dog Lovers & us BC ladies:
Lucky the dog
Mary and her husband Jim had a dog named 'Lucky.'
Lucky was a real character. Whenever Mary and Jim had
company come for a weekend visit they would warn their
friends to not leave their luggage open because Lucky would
help himself to whatever struck his fancy. Inevitably,
someone would forget and something would come up missing.
Mary or Jim would go to Lucky's toy box in the basement
and there the treasure would be, amid all of Lucky's
other favorite toys. Lucky always stashed his finds in his
toy box and he was very particular that his toys stay in the
box. It happened that Mary found out she had breast cancer.
Something told her she was going to die of this
disease....in fact , she was just sure it was fatal.
She scheduled the double mastectomy, fear riding her
shoulders. The night before she was to go to the hospitalshe cuddled with Lucky. A thought struck her...what would
happen to Lucky? Although the three-year-old dog liked Jim,
he was Mary's dog through and through. If I die, Lucky
will be abandoned, Mary thought. He won't understand
that I didn't want to leave him. The thought made her
sadder than thinking of her own death.
The double mastectomy was harder on Mary than her doctors
had anticipated and Mary was hospitalized for over two
weeks. Jim took Lucky for his evening walk faithfully, but
the little dog just drooped, whining and miserable.
Finally the day came for Mary to leave the hospital. When
she arrived home, Mary was so exhausted she couldn't
even make it up the steps to her bedroom. Jim made his wife
comfortable on the couch and left her to nap. Lucky stood
watching Mary but he didn't come to her when she called.
It made Mary sad but sleep soon overcame her and she
dozed.
When Mary woke for a second she couldn't understand
what was wrong. She couldn't move her head and her
body felt heavy and hot. But panic soon gave way to laughter
when Mary realized the problem. She was covered, literally
blanketed, with every treasure Lucky owned! While she had
slept, the sorrowing dog had made trip after trip to the
basement bringing his beloved mistress all his favorite
things in life. He had covered her with his love.
Mary forgot about dying. Instead she and Lucky began
living again, walking further and further together every
day. It's been 12 years now and Mary is still
cancer-free. Lucky? He still steals treasures and stashes
them in his toy box but Mary remains his greatest treasure.Pam & Deja
