brand of magnesium

Options

Hi!

I am two years out from diagnosis and doing well.  However, I still haven't been able to get a good night's sleep (pretty much for the past two years!)  I am exhausted.  On top of that, I get a heck of a migraine once or twice a month.  With so many variables as to why the sleep issues and the migraines, I would like to try magnesium (I see that it can help with sleep and low levels may play a role in migraines).  I just am not sure what brand to take.  I have a major problem swallowing pills (I barely get that darn tamoxifen down every night, and it is pretty small).  Does anybody have any suggestions?  Do they make a liquid magnesium?...:)  This thing with not being able to swallow pills is a real pain in the butt but I just have a real mental block about it (big baby!!)

Thanks!

Cheryl

Check out Vitamin Cottage, or on-line for liquid magnesium.

I have a problem, of sorts, with supplementing straight magnesium--I get a laxative effect at anything greater than 500 mg. After all, magnesium is the main ingerdient in many bowel-cleansing preparations.

Have you had your migraines evaluated by your health care provider? There are many good meds out there for them. You don't have to suffer. And if you're strictly an alternative sort, there are herbs that help some folks.

Or, you may want to search which foods give you the biggest bang for your buck with magnesium content.

    Good luck,

    Anne

    Hi Anne,

Thank you so much for your response.  I will definitely check out Vitamin Cottage.  Are you supposed to take magnesium with something (probably calcium, right?).  I am taking Citracal (the yummy, chocolatey, chewy squares) because I have osteopenia (which my onc actually attributes to the chemo).  I wonder if I ate the Citracal square and then took some magnesium with it if that wouldn't be better than straight magnesium.

I have had my migraines evaluated and I have Imitrex to take.  She also prescribed ketaprofen (an anti-inflammatory) if the Imitrex does not take it away.  I really believe that I get them because of some lack of something.  I am very low on vitamin D.  I never used to sit down to a meal.  I would just grab a handful of nuts or cheese and crackers, etc. throughout the day.  I never had a well-rounded diet so I can only imagine that my poor body is lacking a lot of things.  I would love to get rid of the migraines (usually put me out of commission for the day), or at least cut them down.  I really live in dread of the next one and hate that feeling.

I will also search for foods high in magnesium.  That would probably be the best way to work on this.

    Thanks so much!

I love a product called "Natural Calm" that is a powder you mix with water and pure. The raspberry lemon flavor is nice and much much better than any liquid brands. Also, not added sugar! It's not cheap, but the very BEST I have tried (and I used to sell vitamins at a Whole Foods like store, so I've tried everything!)

    best wishes~

My doctor (chiro) gave me a product call Magsscobplex that has a mix of mag, (200), vit. c (3200), selenium(50), manganese(5) and potassium(99). It comes in a powder that is very bitter, like lemon juice so I mix it with a little OJ and water. You can take a tsp as a supplement, or use it as a colon cleanse by taking a couple of of doses, an hour apart until everything is clear. When I finished treatment, I also did a liver cleanse. I just wanted to get all the gunk out and start fresh.LOL! This supplement is from Megaplex and is only distributed through doctors, but they have great quality control. Their website might give you doctors in your area who you can get it from. I also take melatonin(50), which after a couple of weeks, has really helped my sleep patterns return to normal. I get a chewable peppermint flavored one at Trader Joe's. It is also a great antioxidant, and I swear keeps it me mellow all day.

    Cheryl,

My migraines got way better after menopause. I always had a hormonal component to them, and for years I took my birth control pills straight through to avoid periods, which brought on the headache.

Consider getting your magnesium level checked before supplementing? Not that supplements won't benefit you in more than one way, but you can know for sure. I've only had one patient in years of practice with low magnesium levels as the cause for her migraines. Not that blood levels tell the whole story...

So many things can trigger the migraines. I'm sure you've kept a headache diary in the past to track trends.

Good sleep helps me the most...

    I take Calcium from ProCaps.

    I like it for a number of reasons - The Calcium is powdered, so I don't have to swallow a rock, and I am sure that my body absorbs what it can;

The product contains some D3, so I am getting those positive absorption effects

The product contains magnesium, so I get those positive effects.

    Hope this helps
