I was off AIs for about a year before my second cancer, and I did not lose a pound. My anti-depressant could be the culprit.
What works for me now, but very slwoly, is truly cutting calories (not deluding myself into thinking I am) and working my ass off in the gym. Not just a short walk around the neighborhood, but 4-6 hours a week of aerobic activity where my heart hrate is in its target zone. And two hours a week of strength training. Not just lifting a few weights a few times, but having a regime that targets the whole body and really hammering it.
It's a total commitment. I'm just getting back into form after exchange surgery two months ago. And I'm on a new med that causes weight gain. But I have not gained from it. Haven't lost any extra yet, but I'm working at it.
It's harder for me to control my calories in than it is to control the calories out part!

SoCalLisa: You are a true ray of hope for me. I have gained almost 40# during this BC journey and can't seem to lose anything. I'll be off Arimidex in about a year and am happy to see there is some hope! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

I started dieting and exercising in January of this year and had lost 17 pounds. Switched from Tamoxifen to Aromasin and gained 4 lbs in a week and did not do anything else different. I am totally bummed about this as I have another 10-15 lbs to lose. I will keep working on it and hope that I can make some progress as I have 2+ years to go on Aromasin. I used myfooddiary.com and have recently upped the exercise intensity and amounts.

Hi everyone,
I am three years out on Aromasin. I gained close to 20 pounds--not sure whether it was the sudden chemopause or the Aromasin. I've gotten most of it off. First I went to Weight Watchers. I'm a "usual suspect" there--have been back more times than I can count. Lately I've just been using myfooddiary.com for tracking both food and exercise. But the thing that has helped the most has been working out twice a week with a personal trainer. I do a third weight training session on my own, and I do 45-60 minutes of cardio 5 or 6 days. I am currently two pounds above my WW goal.
The sessions with the personal trainer were a gift from my husband after my treatment ended. I plan to cut back to once a week in the fall. It was worth it, though--I feel great with no joint pain and we're going hiking on vacation in August!

Is this that oxymoron thing, like "military intelligence"
"AIs and weight loss"

I am on Femara for just four weeks and can no longer exercise vigorously as I did prior to taking this drug. The aching joints, fatigue, dizziness and insomnia has removed my quality of life and I know that I am gaining weight. I am losing my strong resolve and upbeat attitude that carried me through my diagnosis, surgery and treatment. I want to get back to the gym, but it will mean stopping the AI and I don't know what to do.
Question: What aspects of our quality of life are we willing to give up in order to reduce our statistical risk of recurrence?

I am on arimidex. I cut out rice, noodles, bread, and other carbohydrates during the week and ate fresh fruits, veggies, skim milk, oat meal and fish and chicken ( lean and broiled) and lost over 20 pounds but have stalled at this place. I exercise daily and eat a little different on the weekends. If I change this even for a few days the pounds come back. Don't know if I would have lost more without the arimidex. Yet, I was able to lose weight on it.

I was totally panicked that I couldn't lose weight, as I'm a big cyclist. I'm on Femara and had my ovaries removed (I'm 47). I was excersising after chemo but tired and the fitness wasn't returning. About a year after the end of chemo, my energy came back, and now I've been able to shed 10 lbs., and still losing (hopefully) so it can be done. I'm just making sure I'm on my bike every day, riding from 1 to 3 hours. Not really counting calories, just not overdoing it.
