Can anyone please help me understand a diagnosis of breast cancer with stage lV mets to the bone, but no primary mass? Negative mammogram, negative bone scan, Cat Scans, MRI's.  Diagnosis was made because of a bone marrow biopsy/aspiration that was ER/PR +.

    Hi Anna

So sorry to hear your news..

It is unusual to be DX with an unknown primary, but as you have found out it does indeed happen.

It means that the pathology has shown malignant BC cells, but as yet they have been unable to locate the primary cancer in your breast.   This could be for a number of reasons ranging from dense breast tissue to microscopic tumour(s) in the breast that have travelled through your blood stream.

There are 2 types of metasteses in the bone, one is to the bone itself and one in the marrow as you have...   ER/PR positive is a favourable thing as it means you should respond well to endocrine therapy such as tamoxifen etc..

    I do hope this helps...

    Sending you love and luck...

    Nikki
