Hello ladies,

I'm getting a bit ahead of myself since I've not had implants put in yet, but my RS told me the manufacturer recommends replacing them every 10 years.  Have you found that to be so?  I can't imagine insurance would cover that. While 10 years is a long time to save up for a procedure, I'd rather not go through the hassle of surgery every 10 years.  I'd appreciate any input.

Carol, I think sometimes they last longer than 15 years, not forever, and sometimes they fail in a year or so.  It depends upon circumstances.  The Mentor site may have information or statistics.

Also, you might ask this question on the breast reconstruction board.  There have been threads there about this and comments in among other recon discussions.

My hair dresser has had saline in for over 20 years and no problem.  Her's weren't even under the muscle.

IMO, the companies have to say a date, and if you get past it, fine and I think most do.

I seem to remember something about a"warranty" whereby if they failed in a certain period of time the implants were free, but you(insurance) pay for the doc and hospital or surgery center.  I'd bet replacement could be done in an office surgery suite too.

I have just not heard of anyone going in every 10 years to have a replacement of implants.

Now, joints of 10 years ago DID have a life of 10 years, that's why they don't like folks my age , esp. younger, getting them.  Nowadays, tho, they last a LOT longer.

I've still got my original (saline) implants from 1992.

They're doing great!

Carol, just wanted to add that I imagine your insurance would cover replacement as it is bc related.  Check your policy and your state regulations.

Tina, I just don't want to be tied to the job for the insurance.  I'm much more at ease after hearing from you ladies.
