I had my port placed at time of my mastectomy (feb 1st) it is r chest area. I hardly know it there most of the time. it works great for me. it's been a god-send for labs/fluids/chemo. my ps says she'll take it out when she does my new boobs in sept and I am already feeling a bit sad about it....  it's like a friend nowLaughing

Enjoylife, Your post was a few weeks ago but I'm just now reading it and wanted to add a comment for anyone that might be reading these and thinking about getting a port. I'm in total agreement about having the port if at all possible. First, because you want to save your veins and secondly, to prevent painful sticks. Not everyone knows how to insert IVs or draw blood painlessly.

I do have one question that may not sound to bright,  what is "tata juice"? My guess is chemo but not sure.  Never heard or read the term, sorry.

lanihardage, I had my port put in at the time of my mast on 5/2, and didn't have 1st chemo tx until 6/4--no problems.  It's damn uncomfortable, but I'm just counting down the weeks until I can have it removed.  Til then, I appreciate it on tx days!

Yes, catlover --the port installation was a long procedure but I was glad I had it for my first treatment yesterday. I put EMLA cream on an hour ahead and covered it with saran wrap. Couldn't feel a thing. I will be happy to get it out, too. That little tube snaking over my clavicle is an unwelcome guest.

I have a port and will have it until my herciton is over next May but I think it keeps me out of breath at time the doctor seems to think its being Anemic from the chemo which is norm but Ithink its the port and I cant wait to get off the chemo and get rid of the extra pounds of water etc ..

My oncologist gave me a prescription for lidacane cream. I know the spelling is not right but it is a cream that you put on about 45 min before they access your port. Have the infusion center give you the big tegaderm dressings to keep it in place or it won't work. It has to be covered to work and those keep it in place over the port.

    Best wishes!
