Ok so I took him in.  They checked tear production - nope.  Ulcers or scratches - nope.  Glacoma (forgive spelling) - nope.  No sign of infection except his teeth.  COULD BE a tooth infection that is affecting his eyes.  He's on antibiotics both orally and topically in his eyes.  If that clears it up its the teeth.  They also drew blood to look for anything that might be off.  If we don't get a call tomorrow the blood work is fine.

He's still walking around eyes half closed or fully closed.  He looks like the saddest dog ever!

The really hard part - if it is his teeth it will cost anywhere from 400-700 to fix the teeth.  he's ALWAYS had bad teeth.  It's the breed and size.  We've had them cleaned over and over but they just get worse.  That's just a lot of $$$.  Sigh.  Hopefully it's a fluke thing that will clear up with the meds.

Jill...that's a crazy lotta money! Is it just for extractions or is he having freakin' root canal? Poor baby though....is he in pain?

    Sigh.....it's always something, isn't it?

    Hi Jill,

I've been following your other thread and so empathize.  I have a ten year old Bichon and she is my baby.  I hope the antibiotics do the trick.

My Bichon and her uncle also have terrible teeth and everytime I'd go to the Vet they wanted to clean her teeth 300 a pop.  I kept doing it and every year later they'd want to do it again.  Aside from the money I was really concerned about her repeadedly having anesthesia.  -Never had this problem with my Royal Standard Poodle.

I recently changed to a holistic vet.  She gave me PetzLife Oral Care Gel

Boy does this stuff work on the tarter.  Mine does fuss like crazy about letting me in her mout but if yours allows it --its great---really softens the stuff.  Eventually you only have to use it twice a week.---Maybe it would work for you?

My new Doc has a dental hygienist that cleans the teeth without knocking out but she wants me to try this route first.  Really gets off allot of gunk.

Hoping its something easily fixable and that he soon will be happily doing his Bichon Buzz.

Jill, I had something similar happen to one of my dogs years and years ago, she walked about squinting and bumping into things, my then vet put it down to pollen the dog had got in her eyes from the long grass, and she'd reacted to it rather like a hayfever type reaction.

As far as I remember she had some sort of eye cream squirted in, today I would use chloramphenical(sp) cream twice a day, to rule out a allergic reaction, then see the vet if no improvement.

Hope they find an answer....that doesn't cost an arm and a leg !

    Isabella.

Jill, this is the first time I read about your dog.  My cat kept one eye half closed.  I took her to a ophthalmologist...she had herpes.  He said that sometimes when they get stressed this can come back.  The usually have it when they're born, but they shed it.  Just another tought.

Also, I had a cat who had HORRIBLE teeth and gums.  He had all of them pulled and did just fine.

    Good luck.

Well the meds have helped so it is his teeth.  We've decided to get them done but if more big money issues come up we'll need to really talk.  The goofy dog that he is - on top of this he hurt his paw somehow and was all "poor me" all weekend.  He's done it before - hurt his paw.  So today I'll call for the appt.

    Hi Jill:

Still sending those hugs for your doggie

Gals: My cat has had trouble with teeth as well

and I was told to get something to put in the water

no taste to it, but .. they did not sell it.. at my vet

and the Pet Value sold one for dogs and cats, NO thanks

Ill pass on that for now

but oh teeth, can be so pricey..

Jill, I really feel for you with this

knowing you love your pet, and the financial aspect
Not a good thing to have them under too much

    Hugs, Sierra

Thanks for the update.  My dd is having lots of vet bills for her King Charles Cavilier.  They really mount up!

Dottie, its Cavalier King Charles, not King Charles Cavalier !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been breeding them for 45 years now...wow, that sounds  a long time.

Whats the problem your DD is having, its mainly hearts, eyes, hips and slipping patellas that cause trouble in this breed, but they are so lovely, I couldn't live without them...Cavaliers and sausage dogs are my BIG weakness.

Hi Jill, Well, I am glad to hear it is just his teeth. And, now his Paw?  Well, that little thing needs some good care and love. Yes, just take him in again. Take Care. Bye.

    God Bless,

    Love,Provided by Animation Library
