Hi,
I had to call my onc yesterday because a couple of my nails are oozing from underneath. its kinda yellow and a little smelly. He put me on keflex 500 mg 4x a day for 14 days.
Has anyone else had this issue and if so what did you do?
Thanks,
Teresa

Hi Teresa!
I had 12 weekly doses of Taxol and it caused a similiar situation for me, only it happened to my big toenails. They oozed yellow and lifted a bit from the nail bed. Not a pretty sight.
I read (on this wonderful website) about using tea tree oil on nails affected by the taxanes, so I bought a bottle at GNC and have used it faithfully.
I rub it liberally all over the sides and top of the affected toenails as well getting some under the nails.
The oozing stopped after a couple of weeks and now the toe nails look discolored but they're still attached to the nailbed.
The tea tree oil does smell, so applying it and then putting on a pair of socks helped with the odor. I also treated my feet to a rubdown with Eucarin cream before I put on the socks. Taxol really dries out the skin and my feet appreciated the special attention.
Good luck with this side effect. Maybe the Keflex will work.
But if it doesn't, try the tea tree oil.
(((hugs))) to you,
Ann

Hi again!
I just remembered something else that worked well and it also helped keep the nailbed clean...I put hydrogen peroxide under the nail. Just dabbed it on with a q-tip. And there was lots of foaming action going on whenever I'd treat the oozing nails with the peroxide. Afterwards, the nails looked better and felt better since the pressure under them seemed to be relieved.
I hope this helps.
((((hugs)))) again to you,
Ann

Teresa,
Let me know if using the Keflex helps. Twice I have been given Levaquin for the oozing/infection from the big toes and thumbnails. Not happy with the med results, maybe if I stayed on it for several weeks. I will talk with the Onc on Tuesday as this is the second occurrence and this time the thumbnail oozed green liquid-definite infection.
take care,
brena

I had trouble with my toenails
they became thick and attached
but did not ooze..
Had to go and get a lotion
I remember it being at Christmas
They were so red, I really
did not want to continue my TX
but the Onc, of course, said
YES.. IT IS FINE..
Best to all of you
Even now, my toenails are v. thickened)
