Rogaine for men only?

I was not sure where to post this, having asked the question once before in a thinning hair conversation under hormonals.  Does anyone know why Rogaine is labeled "for use by men only"?  My hairdresser advised me to try it to combat thinning hair (probably from femara) but I am reluctant to spend the money without consulting with an oncologist.  I am already using nioxin and taking biotin so hate to add anything more to the mix.

There is a formula for women also.  Target carries it.

Studies shows it works better on women then men.  Back when I was younger, before it was OTC, my dermatologist used to prscribe it to women all the time.

There is rogaine for men (5%) and rogaine for women (3% I believe).  The women's version is twice as expensive for half the strength.  You can also get generic minoxidil (same stuff, less expensive).

I was told to use the men's version, not to bother with the lower strength stuff.  I tried it.  I don't know if it had any effect, but I hated using it.  It is applied with an eye dropper, and I have so much practically bare scalp that I had to spread it all over with my fingers. So my hair and scalp were wet -- not a way I was comfortable going out until i could wash it out.

So... I bought enough for a month and used it, and don't plan to buy any more.  If my hair now falls out and proves it was the rogaine, I'll probably buy more.  But for now, I'll just wear my cute hats.

    Janet,

Thanks.  I had no idea that it had to be applied with an eye dropper.  I am kicking myself because about six months ago, the grocery store printer printed out a $20 coupon for Rogaine when I checked out. I didn't really need it then and the coupon expired. (Actually I placed it on the Rogaine shelf the day before the expiration date.) I wondered what forces were at work that led the magical capitalist marketing research to determine that I might buy Rogaine.  Maybe I shouldn't be so paranoid.  The magic marketers probably assume that I have a balding husband.

The rogaine bottles come with an eye dropper marked at the correct dosage.  And FYI: both my onc AND a dermatologist who i consulted about my (*sigh*) lack of hair told me not to bother with the 'women's dosage' bottles.    They're lower dosage, purple (prettier bottles), and double the price of the men's version.  Wierd.

And using it won't make us grow brass anythings. (*teasing grin*)
