The California Supreme Court just ruled that the ban on gay marriage in the state of California is unconstitutional. This is a history making day in our state.
I am doing the happy dance for every gay male and female in this country. Come to good old sunny California and get "hitched."
One state down and 49 more to go for equity for all--the same rights and privileges that have been "reserved" for straights, now equal for gays. Wonder what this means at the Federal level?

grace...Thanks for posting about this. I received a NY Times email alert about it and think it's very encouraging. It boggles my mind, though, that there are still people who don't support this legislation. As a country, we have an awful lot of work ahead of us. But, for the moment, we can celebrate this victory!!!

Just piping in from Massachusetts, where the foundation of society has not crumbled in the four years since gay marriage has been legal. So 48 states to go!
Seriously, I hope that CA and the rest of the country can take a look at things here and realize that after all the hoopla settled down, it's just part of normal life now. Well, maybe my perspective is skewed because my boss is married to his partner, and my lesbian co-worker and I swap stories about our kids every day. I'm sure there are pockets of prejudice and hate out there, I just don't run into them too often -- probably because I'm straight and don't have to deal with it personally. But it does seem like the country is coming around, slowly but surely, especially young people.
Anyway, I hope the legislation sticks in CA, and congrats to all of you who can get married if you so choose!

I listened to Mayor Newsome give a press conference yesterday about this. I forgot about Mass already having gay marriage there--med brain!!
However, I think he forgot also as he said this,"As California goes, so goes the rest of the nation. Other states will fall in line and soon gay marriage will be a standard across the country." I think he loved getting up there and speaking--but I'm with you Marin, I think we have a lot to do for this to be a standard across the country.
There are pockets of populations that are against gays altogether. Some of us are lucky to live in areas where we are not subjected to that. I happen to be straight, but because I have relatives that are gay, and have been through a lot to be open about that, I support gays having all the same rights and privileges that I have simply because I am straight and married to a man. It shouldn't matter who you want to marry. And to hear the Christian conservatives keep muttering on about how marriage is for a man and a woman, so they can raise children is just ridiculous. I know plenty of women and or men in gay relationships raising children. Well I could go on but will leave it there.
I too hope that this decision sticks to the ribs of California!!

In line with this topic, I've been hearing an interesting perspective lately and this is that a number of couples who support gay rights are choosing not to marry until all couples, regardless of sexual orientation, can legally do so. I guess it's kind of like boycotting marriage, huh?
On a celebratory note, did y'all hear that Ellen and Portia plan to marry? YAAAAAY!!!!

My sister and I had an interesting debate about this.
I am amazed that my sister and I can be on such opposite ends and have such meaningful conversations!
