Can anyone PLEASE tell me if I will know the results of a diagnostic mammo and MRI on the day I have the exams?

    Thanks for your time.

I'm sorry austin my facility takes several days unless they see something and then it is reported immediately.  As I understand it the films are given a cursory look see when they are produced but then if nothing jumps out they are put in the order that they were done and a more thorough review is done and finally the results are sent to you and your docs.  I would feel a lot better if I could get the results immediately too!  Maybe someone has had a different experience and they will chime in?

I think it depends on the facility.  You can certainly call ahead, and ask if you can expect to hear the results while you are still there.

When I had my diagnostic mammogram last month, they told me before I left that I would need at least one biopsy.  The radiologist wanted to look at my films some more, to decide whether I needed two or three areas biopsied.  My doctor had the written report the next day, and I was told I needed 3 areas biopsied.

I hope your facility can tell you your results the day of your exam.   We spend far too much time waiting and worrying as it is.

Austin--the facility I've been going to gives you immediate feedback on the diagnostic mammo (the radiologist reads it while you wait), while I've had wait times with the breast MRIs from 3 to 5 days. I just recently had to switch facilities in March--this new radiologist went over the mammo and the MRI immediately for me--but I really think it was because she wasn't very busy.  I think it all depends on how busy they are that day, and if they want to study and compare your films a little longer--that's actually a good thing--you really don't want them to rush thru and miss something.

Austin, The breast center that I go to (and one of the reasons that I go there) reads the diagnostic/digital mammogram on the spot.  If they feel that you need further pics, they do them right then and I've even had an ultrasound done on the spot.  As for the MRI, I had to schedule that and it wasn't 'read' while I was there.  I had to get the results from my Dr. Call and ask.  Best wishes

Hello ladies and thanks. I did get the mammo yesterday, sono yesterday and MRI yesterday. I could run around work topless and wouldn't care anymore. The only feedback from radiologist was that what the onco. felt could be scar tissue from lumpectomy but MRI would further define everything. I didn't see him after so I guess I'll wait for onco. appt. on the 28th. Damn......wait, wait, wait. Anyway, thank you for your time and information.

austin, LOL at running around topless at work.  I always tell my oncologist that I could sit in the waiting room topless and everyone there could 'cop a feel' if they so desired!!!  At any rate, you could try calling the oncologist for the results before the 28th...that seems like to long to wait.  I'd give them until about Wednesday and then call and see if they have your results.  Tell them you are nervous and NEED to know.  Hopefully they will be compassionate.  You may have to wait for a nurse to call you back (at least that has been my experience).  Best wishes!

At some facilities, you can request a  "slotted appointment" which means a radiologist will be present to read the the results right away, although they may or may not give you their findings. I've found that my facility prefers to give their report to the dr who ordered the procedure, and let them deal with giving you the info. But at least, if you can get in to see your dr, you can get the results pretty quickly.

I got the results of my MRI within two days...had it done on Monday and Wednesday my onc called with the results. Generally, I find most drs like to give you the report in person, so this was unusual...but it was good news and he sounded genuinely happy.

It really does depend on the facility by and large.  I had a MRI after an US bx to rule out other neoplasms.  Unfortunately, by BS called Friday morning (it was done at 10pm on a wednesday night) to report the bad news.  It meant no lump for me, and I was scheduled for surgery the following thursday :(

The place i had mine was in another town 30 miles from the BS but the doc was actually present at the MRI, so she knew right away and emailed the results to him that night, but he was in surgery all day thurs.  He called just be 8 am friday morning!  I was surprised.
