I had other ladies asking me what books helped me the most. So I'm going to share just a few that will hopefully help some of you. Please add to my list, so we all can find good resources to learn more about alternative or conventional treatment options. I buy my books on half.com or amazon.com used. Save a few $$$$.

Thank you for starting this thread. I'm interested in the nutrition books especially. Do they recommend a vegan diet? I just can't imagine life without my cookies made with eggs and butter, but if that's the way to be healthy, I'm open to the idea. Today I had my coffee with 'almond breeze' and liked it. So who knows, maybe there's a dairy-free future me.
Right now I have a book from the library Vegan Planet by Robin Robertson. So far I'm looking for new ingredients at the store, things I've never heard of before. Haven't tried recipes yet. Just can't imagine cooking without eggs.

Sorry... no dairy is a big part of bc diets. But most say you can have organic eggs. The rule no whites..bread, white rice, sugar, salt & pasta. Pasta has been a hard one for me. Of course NO RED MEAT or Pork.
I have been on a healthy diet going on six months. I lost 25 lbs. and I FEEL GREAT! It is worth the draw backs. My dentist even asked what have I been doing because my gums and teeth look good. Chemo is very hard on the gums and teeth.
Hardiest part is going to dinner with others. You make them feel guilty that they are not eating good things. Also I have people who will not ask me to dinner if they want to go some place they know I can't find anything to eat. I tell them I can always it a salad. I'm not 100% but about 80% veggie lady. I still crave protein (I'm not a big bean fan) so I eat chicken and fish. I know chicken is not good but I can't feel up on veggies.

You'll find many archived recipes. Also, read her own story of how she overcame leukemia.

Do organic dairy products make the grade, or are they off limits, too on your diet? What about low or non-fat organic plain yogurt? Why is dairy bad for bc ?
And would organic chicken be a bad thing, in moderation? Is it the animal fat, or the hormones that are bad?
I haven't been able to read as many books as I would like on this, but thanks for your list.

This thread is a great idea. Here are my additions:
Jane Plante(I can't remember the name of her book, but check her web site) she talks all about the diary link, yogurt is a big no no.
Dr. Christine Northrup, The Wisdom of Menopause, she talks about nutrition, supplements, mind/body connections
Fla Lady. I have been on the same path with you. Lost 20 lbs in six months. I cut out sugar, but cannot seem to get off chocolate totally. Have to have one vice! No more wine, although I only had an occasional glass, very little pasta (tough cause I'm half Italian) and lots of exercise. Try to get free range chicken and it is okay, and I read that the cheap beef, from diary cows is what you want to avoid. An occasional black angus burger from grazing cattle is okay. We do not have to be martyrs! Just sensible.
I have also started using rice drink or almond drink, vanilla flavored, on my cereal. It actually tastes pretty good.

Cancer diets are all about detoxing the body and rebuilding it back up. Dairy and the meats are a no no because it is very hard on the digestive system to break down these foods. It slows down the body from getting the fruit and veggies at a high rate of speed. Chinese Medicine believe we get bc because our "sewage system" is backed up??? There are now links to the carcinogens (the burnt layer on cooked meat) could cause cancer. They have found it in men who grill out alot. Chicken is all about the hormones they put in it. (also our red meats) But I agree for some.... it is moderation. But I have active cancer so I don't take to many chances. If you are going to eat meat you need to do regular detox of the liver and colon.

I've been reading some of the sites listed. I need to read up more about the dairy connection. This will be the hardest give-up for me- sugar, wine and beef, no problem, but yogurt...no! lol. I've been sticking to organic chicken (small portions) since my cancer diagnosis, although I've never been a red meat eater.
The "sewage system" hypothises makes sense to me. I felt 10 years younger the days following my colonoscopy! :-) I want to maintain that feeling, so all of this info is great.
I have lost 15 lbs since my surgery, also, just with cutting out sugar and exercising daily. Don't need to lose anymore, but would like to build muscle instead.
Juicing has enabled me to up my veggie intake considerably, and helped me get more variety and greens into my diet. One of the problems I have with the vegan diets is there reliance on tufo and other soy products. Makes it tough.

Skip the soy. It is too controversial as you will see by checking out the other threads. My holistic doc has advised no soy at all, until they know for sure. Fine with me, I hate the stuff. She also advised the detox. I just finished a liver detox and am doing the colon one now. Also, lots of supplements. I guess it all works. A friend came in from out of town yesterday and told me I look 10 years younger. Please don't say she was just being nice!!

And congrats on looking 10 years younger! I said I feel 10 years younger, but I'm afraid my gray hairs and wrinkled skin keep me from looking younger, at all, but I'll take what I can get.
I agree about the soy. It's in so many products, it's tough to avoid.

Lindamemm-Jane Plante's theory about dairy is very interesting, and pretty convincing. How does that square with the Budwig cottage cheese and flax protocol?

Budwig uses cottage cheese as a binder for flax. It is the only dairy in this protocol. He preferred cottage cheese to yogurt because it has a high percentage of sulfur. Again dairy is about clogging up your colon. A yogurt once in a while is not going to hurt this protocol.
I had lot of people tell me in the last few weeks that I look even better than I did before bc. I blow away my doctor last month. He wanted to know what I'm doing. (of course he really did not want to hear about natural stuff.)
I would like to hear what others are doing to detox liver & colon. I just can't make myself do enemas.

I'm on day 4 of my very first detox. I got my supplies from www.herbdoc.com. From the newsletters at the same site, the reasons stated for no animal products in the diet are mainly related to cholesterol and digestion. In regard to cholesterol, animal products are the only ingredients in our diet that give us elevated levels. If you have high cholesteral, which I do, eliminating animal products from my diet will in turn eliminate my elevated cholesteral level. I can give up meat without discomfort, but I love to bake with recipes containing butter and eggs, so that's a tough one for me. I've also been eating flaxseed with yogurt regularly for almost a year now, so I'd have to find an alternative there also. As for dairy, milk is a wonderful food -- if you're a cow. I can go along with that reasoning, but I still love dairy products.
The main reason for me to consider giving up eggs and dairy is my objection to the deplorable conditions the animals are forced to endure. I keep telling myself, if I object to eating meat based on how the industry treats the animals, I really should be objecting even more to eggs and dairy products. ....maybe I should get my own chickens and a cow and treat them kindly.

The colon cleanse I am doing is a product from my doc called Magscorbplex. It is actually high concentrate of vitamin c, magnesium, and other minerals. The liver detox was also an herbal based product from her that I took in a pill form,(2 three times a day) for 6 weeks. You can do it by mixing a powder form over a few days, but I could not get the stuff down without gagging. Right now, I am doing the colon thing just once in the eve. A teaspoon in a bit of OJ with water. It is very bitter, but works by the morning. I will do a more thorough cleanse in a couple of weeks. I need to have a couple of days at home (for obvious reasons!) and my schedule is too busy right now.
Flalady- we are truly sisters! I loved proving my docs wrong. When I finished rads with no fatique and got through the winter with no viruses of any kind, they were amazed. They told me to expect a year to get back to normal, and I did it in 3 months. Of course, they are furious that I am not doing Arimidex, but I have a wonderful holistic doctor who is helping me to balance everything naturally.
As for the gray hair-I know it is not good for you, but I just can't give up my Excellence by L'oreal! I do it myself, so I think it is better than salon stuff, it is so easy, and cheaper!
I think all the vitamins are really helping with my skin. A woman even complemented my on how shiny my hair was when I was walking in the park one day. And even though my eyes are still bad, and always have been, I am actually able to read some things without my readers that I could not see at all before.
I think Jane Plant therorizes that milk builds breast tissue and it is the excess breast tissue that feeds the cancer cells. But it is true that disease is filtered through the liver, so the liver detox is important. Her book made so much sense to me that I rarely use any dairy. My digestion has improved too. No more heatburn. She said she felt the yogurt she was eating contributed to her reccurances so watch that, you yogurt lovers. She says no to cottage cheese too. I do not know anything about the other diet that reccommends it.
My doc also said that eggs are okay, just get the free range kind. I have a trader joe's near me and they have great stuff. Try their pepitas(pumpkin seeds). They are a great snack when you feel a need for chips.
I know I might be sounding like I am living with rose colored glasses, but from the minute I decided that I did have some control over this beast, I felt so empowered. We have so much power within us to tame the beast.
I am determined to make my good cells so strong that they will be able to fight off the free radicals. We can't control all the junk on the outside, but we sure can control how much junk we put inside.
Oh and one more book that was great:
"WHat your doctor doesn't know about Nutrition", by D. Ray Strand.
He became a convert to nutritional cures when his conventional methods were not helping his patients. In my dreams, I will open my regular doctor's minds!

Linda- I'm with you! Thanks for the informative post. I believe that the more we can take control over what we put into our bodies and how we live, the better chance we have of beating back this disease.
If nothing else, we will make ourselves stronger overall to fight the cancer if it does come back.

I'm sure Plant's dairy may have had some bearing, but she was using regular pasteurized, over the counter dairy. The nutritional difference between raw dairy and pasteurized dairy is night and day.
I have been learning a lot about this, e.g., how more people have died from pasteurized milk than raw mik.
Also, somebody challenged Jane Plant's footnotes as not being accurate.

This is a great thread. I strolled over to it after posting on phytoestrogens and soy (another article suggesting particularly ER+ women should avoid soy). Then I ranted about high fructose corn syrup, abdominal/thigh fat, lipocytes and insulin and estrogen, because I had just eaten a yogurt and noted it to be #2 on the ingredient list. Arggg!
But my question here for anyone is can you give a typical day of what you do eat, since you've cut out dairy and red meat/pork and whites (breads, pastas, rice etc). That might help show us what it's like.
I'm so impressed with the weight loss, as I notice my (never before) abdominal fat roll. There lies estrogen and lipocyte fat cells influencing my body insulin. Might want to inject my AI right to the target area.

Ok here is an 'ideal nutrition ' day for me ( have been starting to be pretty good lately - knock on wood ! )
Morning:
1 glass warm water with juice of 1 lemon - to flush the system.
1 serving detox tea
3 Tbsp. freshly ground flax seed with 1/4 c lowfat cottage cheese.
1 banana
Snack:
1 apple
1 serving of natures' path Smart bran cereal with 1/2 cup rice milk
Noon:
1 Whole wheat pita stuffed with
1 can tuna(packed with olive oil but drained), white wine vinegar, black pepper and scallions.
salad
Afternoon snack:
orange or some other fruit
Dinner:
1/2 cup of lentils cooked with very little ground beef (organic)
1/2 cup of rice ( white or wild)
Green beans
Snack:
1 piece of chocolate
1 orange
air popped popcorn.
Lots of green tea throughout the day.
8 brazil nuts ( for the selenium)

I think if we eat in small amounts it should not hurt that much, but then again I might be making excuses too lol..

Thanks Trigeek. That is great on the fruit, whole wheat, low dairy with rice milk substitute, green tea, brazil nuts and veggies. My most difficult is always the veggies, as I digest them better cooked.
My typical day is:
bran or wheat cereal with one small banana or blueberries with small amount of skim milk; coffee
lunch: yogurt, few nuts, and an orange with water and green tea or green salad with tomato, olive oil dressing
dinner: meat (yep, red meat too) but small portion, cooked onions/tomatoes or peas, beans etc. Tend to stay away from on the table rice or potatoes.
prior to 8 pm: if hungry, more cereal, if not, an orange. If I've missed my veggies, a V8 low salt.
But, this does not result in weight loss unfortunately. So, I'm pushing up the exercise, and cutting more of the sugars, whites, and may switch just to fish/chicken.
Hmmm, just have to work out more so outgo calories exceeds intake.

I use 2% milk on my Kashi cereal. Is that OK?
I need to reach far back in my cupboard and get the detox tea I have from Whole Foods.

I have found that eating throughout the day, small things, has helped me to continue to lose the weight in my midsection, put on during menopause, that has been linked to Bc. I don't do dairy at all anymore. I use vanilla flavored Rice Drink or almond drink from Trader Joe's with my high fiber cereal for breakfast. I have totally given up adding sugar to anything. I use an agave sweetener and cinnamon on my oatmeal. I always take an apple with me in the car so that if I get hungry I don't reach for some junk when I get home. I snack on seeds and nuts. Being of Italian descent, I love my homemade spaghetti sauce, but I will put it over this stuff called quinoa (sp?). I also eat lots of salads and have been adding more fish. I know it may sound boring, but I have really gotten use to my new diet. Another key is weight bearing exercise to speed up metabolism, since muscle burns more calories than fat. I do 10 min. series of free weights, ballet type leg work, and stomach crunches and repeat it during a hour tv program in the eve. I never eat past 6 pm. I have also gotten use drinking tea without milk. I never used sugar in it. As far as meat, a little bit is okay, just make sure it is black angus type beef, not cheap meat from dairy cows, and free range chicken.

i read one book, highly recommended by my health food store lady, that said people with O type blood need to have low fat, organic red meat 7-10 times a week -- which counteracts everything else i've read....

In respect to dairy products, my understanding is that there are natural growth hormones, even in organic dairy, that fuel cancer cells. However, studies have shown that 'fermented' dairy, such as yogurt and cheeses, are actually beneficial in fighting cancer.
I don't understand the problem some have found with regards to chicken. In Canada, it is illegal to use hormones in chickens. I thought it was the same in the US. It is such a good source of protein that I would hate to have to give it up.
No wonder it is so confusing...what about the new studies re coffee? First it was bad, then it was ok, now it is suppose to be good for us. I really think that moderation is the key. I think that going overboard, one way or the other, throws our bodies off somehow. Just look at all the vegetarians that have joined us here in spite of their healthy diets. Now that would tick me off!! -
Pip, I don't trust any dairy anymore. I have rice drink with my cereal
(the vanilla flavor is pretty good). In Jane Plante's book, she talks about eating a lot of yogurt during treatment and her tumors kept coming back. When she changed her diet she cured herself.
I think that it is important that we eat a varity of things and make it all as organic as possible. I use eggs from free range chickens only and eat grass fed beef. Low grade ground beef is usually from dairy cows, I don't go there. I think that the US has a long way to go to clean up our food chain.
Playwrite, I am an O girl. Just had some roast beef for dinner, organic of course, but I really do not eat much meat anymore. Especially the processed lunch meats that I use to love. I never heard of the meat for O blood types in all the books I read. Do you know where that info is from?

I also found a book by Dr. Patrick Quillin called Beating Cancer With Nutrition.
He is a former VP of Cancer Treatment Centers of America. The book is quite helpful and even gives preferred supplements categorized for people when money is an object. (He tells you which ones to take as a prority). He explains and documents his entire approach and also offers menus and recipes.
I highly recommend this book which also comes with a cd. I was able to get it from the library.

I don't think rice milk has any added sugar... however, it has a slight sweet taste.
