I thought that when I had the Middle Eastern bread dip humus with whole wheat pita bread it was a fairly "healthy" food.  However, a major component of humus is tahini, which is sesame seed paste.  Sesame seed paste has has phytoestrogens and for us people who have already had some estrogen positive BC issues, I understand it should be avoided. Oh well.  Everything in moderation I guess. The world is a dangerous place.

Oh my Lord, what next? I love my hummus but my BC had estrogen positive receptors, that's why I steer clear of soy products. This is very depressing news indeed. Seriously, I don't eat red meat or pork, eat one large tossed salad daily with lots of veggies, and stick to whole wheat pasta. This is just too depressing for words ...

I use hummus made from crushed chickpeas not tahini.  It is VERY delicious as it has olive oil and garlic in it.

You can use peanut butter instead of Tahini. I make my own humus and have PB anytime I am out of the Tahini or if it has dried up..You can just use the chick peas or any other type bean and no paste but a tbs of olive oil per can of beans.

However, I heard that peanuts also have estrogen...  so no peanuts, either...

I thought chickpeas were a no-no too? Does anyone know?

chickpeas are ok to eat, by the way you can have hummus as long as you're not eating it three times a day every day for the rest of your life, if you have it once or twice a week it's not harmful.

Did you not see the writing on the wall?  Most foods have this in it.  There was a article yesterday on msn.com that there is NO proof that food with estrogen can cause bc.

Agreed...many foods have some phytoestrogens and not enough is known about actual body interactions.  If phytochemicals were better understood, they wouldn't have to keep retracting statements like "lycopene in tomatoes prevents prostate cancer."

I thought sesame seeds interfered with tamoxifen metabolization, similar to grapefruit.....

    did I read that incorrectly?

Isn't hummus made from chickpeas?  I never heard of it made from sesame seeds and I understand it is good for you.

chickpeas (garbanzos) and tahini, garlic, olive oil, salt/pepper....it's the tahini (ground sesame seeds) and usually is about 1/3 cup of tahini.  Granted, in moderation it probably is just fine, but just the same, I skip the tahini and just blender-up the beans.
