I've had 3 arthroscopes for MLL, meniscus tears, and eval for replacement.

I've not had a displaced knee cap, tho.  Treatment is different.  but if you get scoped and not open sugery, I was fine for about 16 hrs because of the pain meds put in the knee and then they wore off.

Ask about any post op complications: swelling will decrease range of motion and then when you try to get better bending, it hurst like hell.

So--get a referral to a PT Pre op and find out and practice what exercises and such for Postop.  I didn't on the last go and could hardly get out of a chair.  I had to have a cath. inserted cause I could't get up fast enough to go pee.  Of course, I foolishly had both knees done at one time---thought I was tough, but it was the worst I've ever hurt.

As usual second opinions are good things to see what might  be a new treatment or procedure that is less invasive.

Make your hospital stay as short as possible because of infections and you Don't want one in the joint, bones.

PM any other questions, but be sure to let me know what the ortho says, OK?

    Good luck

I have had 4 knee surgeries after 2 bad accidents---2 arthroscopes for torn meniscus (cartilage tears), incision and removal of Baker's Cyst from knee joint (Popliteal Cyst), and finally full knee joint replacement.

I think these problems are different than your problem, since i have had no knee cap problems and, in fact, i still have my original knee cap rather than have had a replacement done in the joint replacement surgery.  But if the docs want to do an arthroscopic surgery to smooth out your cartilage and clean it up inside the joint, i think it would be good to ask them questions about the purpose of this procedure, and if it is totally necessary.  I had to have the knee replacement earlier in my life because of the arthroscopic surgeries which had removed enough cartilage that i only had about 30% left.  I have since read articles that arthroscopic surgeries are being viewed differently than before and not considered as good an answer to the torn cartilage problems, as previously thought.  Be sure to ask about this if they suggest this kind of surgery as a solution for you.

    Good luck!

    peace,

    celia
