Has anyone had radiation after a mastectomy?
-
Hi Lindalou- I had rads after my mastectomy and chemo. It was not so bad...a bit tiring, but as long as I kept putting the cream on my skin I did not really burn all that much. There is some research out there now that suggests that there is a real benefit for certain women (primarily node positive disease) to undergo radiation even after mastectomy, so in my book it was well worth the trouble and I do not regret choosing to do it. I am now 7 months out from completing all my treatment and I feel pretty good!
Good luck to you!

Yep add me to the list. I think any stage III'er gets rads these days even after mastectomy. Were you node positive?
Take care,
Bugs

Me too. Mastx scheduled for 4/22! Any advice? Then rads, then reconstrux...had 2 regimens of chemo & lumpectomy - microfocalized find calls for mastx. Any advice on getting through rads - helping keep skin in shape? Thank you forum angels!

cally... I swear by aloe and coconut oil. I had 33 rads after the bilateral mastectomy. I'm just about 3 months out from treatment, no evidence of rads except for the tanned boob and arm pit. Hook up with a rads group for day-to-day advice. Oh yes, I think curcumim made a difference for me (3000 mg orally/day).
Oh, just read your message again... your a ways out from surgery even. There's plenty of advice here on surgery, chemo, rads, reconstuction... I've personally done it all too. Hugs to you. I know these few weeks before surgery can be nerve-wracking but you'll be fine. Just rest, take care of yourself and before you know it the entire ordeal will be behind you.

I have a question if anyone happens to read this...my mom found out today that she will have a mast., then chemo, then radation, then recontruction.
Does the expander go in when the mastectomy happens, or not because it might interfere with the radiation? Kinda confused.
XOXO
Steph -
Yes, mast with chemo and then 6 weeks of rads.
Steph - I am sorry about your mom. Have her check with her plastic surgeon - most won't do expanders on the rads side (unless they use the skin from the Lat).
