Yup, Barbe. It was so cold there were no lifeguards in sight anywhere & the chairs were all up from the surf. LOL. But technically it was a beach. Even if I was wearing my winter coat!!

Oh. I didn't mean to worry you.

I just cut this from the Jan surgery thread.

I just hate cluttering up the beach with my gar-bage.

But here's my saga of today:

Today has been a hum-dinger for me, but I am home safe & sound and have read thru everyone's challenges and that has certainly put mine in perspective.

This morning I spent the morning getting totally & completely lost to track down a BC surgeon here locally in FL..... my PT "freaked out" over the appearance of my chest last week during my initial evaluation. She was able to refer me to a surgeon here...... who because she has the compassion of an angel was willing to see me.

Long story short, MY surgeon had left a staple in my incision, that I didn't discover till we were 16 hours from home down here in FL. What the..........?????? [Feel free to insert nasty word here.] My oncologist also reviewed my incision during our exit interview & he 'over-looked' it too. Yet there it was big as day upon my first shower down here.

This new, hip, young, female surgeon here removed the offending staple, put me on an antibiotic for the skin 'infection' that's resulted. She also aspirated fluid from that side where all of this was goin' on. She made her opinions of the whole thing known thru out our time together..... which was so demoralizing. DUH. There's no 'sawing-the-sawdust' in what has already been done. She wants to see me back there when I'm thru the antibiotic.

I then had an hour for lunch before going to my first 'actual' PT session. My therapist is SOOOOO gentle that I can't imagine how we will be able to make any progress in the 8 sessions I have scheduled with her. I think if you blew on your computer screen it would impact my shoulder/ROM with about as much energy as she has put me thru...... she wants to be VERY cautious -- especially after what I'd been thru this morning.

Ye gads.

Blah, blah, blah. So I have spent another ENTIRE day in the land of BC reclaimation..... left here at nine and back at 4:30.

I am grateful that this gal was willing to see me. I trust that what she has done has not been a step backwards. We put our lives into the hands of our fellow humans and then must accept their best efforts.

Glad that this day can be put behind you.  I think I get your drift about it being demoralizing.  When you feel like a doofus for being the patient who has had something done a less-than-optimal way.  I am sure that your surgeon didn't leave it there on purpose and unfortunately skipped over it in review.  It could be that the area was swollen and obscured the staple.  I like to give my physician's the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise, as I am sure that must be how you feel.  It is a matter of trust.

Surfing in on one leg to say hi to everyone and wish Faith some fast healing.  So sorry you had to go through that, hope you heal quickly.  Won't be long until spring and we can enjoy the beach combing.

I felt like I had to defend him.

The demoralizing part was the staples to begin with..... I never thought to ask him how he was going to close the incision and he never mentioned his choice.... so imagine my chagrin to find over 80 in my chest upon waking up. Ahhhhhh, there were other choices??? Surely so.  

She was abhorant at the thought of staples to begin with and the idea that he had left one in, meant he was the most incompatant of butchers..... as she rolled her eyes with disdain.

When I spoke to him, he appologized gazillions of times. He, too, spoke of the amount of swelling at the time of their being removed etc etc. To see it six weeks later you could spot it from across a busy interstate...... I didn't see it at the time. Obviously.

As grateful to her as I was for her willingess to come to my aid, I can't imagine what she thought she was accomplishing by raking him/my surgeon over the coals???

It was a bizarre twist to the whole story of my experience.

When I told her he has been voted the best BC surgeon in central OH, she rolled her eyes and said, "Well then I am extremely concerned over the state of care in Ohio."

I get it. You disagree.

It's not helping me at this point for you to belabor your disapproval.

Let's move on.

(((Hugs))) Faith most of us had staples and my home nurse took mine out.Hope the skin heals up quickly.

I'm pretty sure I have more....excess tissue...on my chest than Faith (going by the picture above) so  I cannot imagine staples! They would go into my ribs wouldn't they? I had steri-strips...of which I was allergic of course...even though I warned them...sigh.

Faith, part of your stress was your surgeons' burden that you took on. Let it go sister! You done good! He did okay.

gee whiz... why is it that we take on these burdens, esp when not of our doing? And why do doctors and other specialist type people feel it necessary to put that burden on patients who are obviously in a fragile or less than optimal place (original reason plus the thing that has brought them to seek help) sheesh...

Barbe is right...let it go, like water flowing from your cupped fingers.

When I had my first recon, I noticed all sorts of pin dots of dried blood in pairs around my tummy and shoulders.  Ther were maybe 8 or so pairs.  When I went for my post-op I asked the PS.  He said he puts  little staples in to hold the drapes firmly away fromt he surgery field.  I thought the same as you, Barbe.  Wouldn't they hit my ribs?  Maybe they are special short ones, and for sure they don't crimp, but it was wierd anyway.  They left no visible scars anyway.

The redness has gone from crimson by yesterday to unhappy pink this morning.... so I'm already moving in the right direction with the help of the anti-biotic.

Attempting to let the whole day-of-three-stodges-nonsense receed from my mind & body.
