South Beach????

Maybe this topic has already been covered. If it has I'm sorry to repeat it. I was just wondering if anyone here has tried the South Beach Diet? I bought the book and my husband and I are trying the diet together. I'm just on day 5 - so haven't done very much yet. Has anyone had success with this plan? Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Barb
PS - The picture I have posted was a couple of years ago, after chemo but before Femara! I've gained 20 pounds since then!

Hi Barb,
My daughter and I went on South Beach last April when I finished chemo, and I lost 14 lbs. My daughter lost 18 lbs. I went off in July (son's wedding), and tried since then to eat healthier. Sadly for me, I put 10 back on, month by month. So I'm still down 4. My daughter did not start to gain until she became pregnant, but I must say she is not putting on as much weight as her last pregnancy (better food choices).
It works well, isn't too painful, but I was not disciplined enough to stay on South Beach phase 3.
Better success to you and your husband!

Hi! Ive done South Beach. Lost 30 pounds on it and my big fat belly got much smaller. Went off it when I was diagnosed with bc 3 years ago and have gained it all plus more back.
Im starting South Beach again tomorrow. Its the only diet that has really worked for me. Its pretty healthy too. My cholesterol went down when I was on it. The first 2 weeks are pretty tough, but once you get past phase I, phase 2 is pretty easy.
I also got creative and have some great recipes. Even have a chocolate cheesecake recipe that has no sugar in it.
Good luck to you and your husband. Tomorrow I begin!

Pat and Nicki,
Thanks for the replies! We are still in that phase 1 time and its getting pretty hard to stick to it ( but we are!!). Nicki, I'd love to hear some of your recipes. They sound great!
The hardest part for me is missing my morning bagel! I am so sick of eggs! Just another week and it should get easier though.
It does seem to be working - I've lost 4 pounds this first week. That's better than always gaining ( like I had been doing!)
Thanks again!! Good luck to you, Nicki, with starting again! Will you do a full 2 weeks of phase 1?

Thank you!! I'm going to make the pot roast tonight!!
Has anyone ever moved to phase 2 early? I've been getting dizzy ( had to leave church yesterday) and had some intestinal
problems. I think my problem is that I'm a picky eater and don't like some of th ethings so I just eat less than is suggested.
Anyways, i decided that I was going to move to phase 2 after only 7 days. Anyone else ever do this?

Barb, Phase 1 is really for overcoming your sugar cravings. The real core of the diet is Phase 2. If you're dizzy or your body isn't responding well, by all means move on to Phase 2. As long as you stay away from the "foods to avoid" and watch your portion sizes, you should do fine.

The top two threads (Recipes and Basic Info 101) alone will give you so much more info than the book! Also, the moderators are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. This used to be Prevention's South Beach Diet Discussion Forum, but it's now called the "Weight Loss Forum" because SBD now has it's own fee-based website. I was a regular poster there for more than 3 years (screen name Love2Dance).

Thanks for the great website to try. I glanced at it but will spend more time later. It seems they try hard not to say South Beach Diet... but you can tell what they're talking about.
I have a pot roast in the oven from the other recipe site you gave me.
Thank you!!

Hello to all,
I decided to bump this up for anyone interested in the South Beach Diet. There are a couple of links to some great websites here. The nurse practitioner at my cancer center highly recommended South Beach to me yesterday during my check-up-- she also said that a diet high in sugar tends to feeds cancer cell-- yikes, how scary is that?? She also recommended daily exercise to ward off bc recurrence, and also said the Mediterranean Diet is excellent.
