    eab,

So sorry to hear of your mom's dx.  They won't know the stage until after the cancer is removed & lymph nodes checked.  Staging is determined by the size of the tumor, nodal involvement and cancer cells that have traveled outside of the tumor area.  I had a PET scan after surgery to determine if the cancer had spread to another part of my body.  It was normal but if it had shown spread to say, the liver or somewhere, then the staging is stage IV.

You have come to a good place to ask your questions.  Let us know how she is doing, maybe encourage her to come here?  Lots of love and support from people who have been in her shoes!  Hugs, Marsha
