pooch...the liklihood of recurrence is based on so many factors, from the type to it's hormonal and Her2 characters to the grade, etc., etc., etc. I do believe that there is an actual website that oncologists use to plug in an individual's data and receive a composite number indicating the chances that the cancer will recur, thus suggesting chemo as a treatment option. Maybe someone here remembers the url to the site..?

For myself, I never wanted to know any of that stuff because, either way, it wouldn't contribute to my happiness in the moment. And that's all I'll ever have....this moment.

Marin, this s a great thing that u've said. i wish BC would have occurred to me n spared my sweet Mother. i could've thought your way if i would have been sufferring. I'm worried since my mother has gone through this. so i want to a detailed analysis, so that no recurrence occurs to her. she is 46yrs old. she was done with a lumpectomy followed by removal of axillary glands.she had DCIS, T2-N0-M0, ER+/PR+ & she underwent chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy.three months back all were done. now she is under tamoxifen. i'm always worried if recurrence occurs. doctors say its the 1st stage n since so many things are done, recurrence might not happen. but i'm not convinced. always very tensed for her. will convey my mother the way u think. its good to hear such thing from u. but then again, we should always be careful. rite? take care, be happy...pooch

oh sweetie- your mom would never want to trade places- as a 48 yo old mom- who is constantly fearful of recurrance, but at same time

trying to live to my fullest/happiest...I would not want my family to also worry about me.  Enjoy every day and love each other.  We never know what could happen to anyone of us.

    Blessed Be!

    Hi Pooch,

Once all the treatments are done we really have to just accept that we have done everything we could to make sure we don't get a recurrence and it sure sounds like everything was done!

There are many lifestyle changes that have been proven to help prevent recurrences too.

One is diet. Improving your diet to healthier foods that include more fruits and veggies and as little meat as possible is important. Lowering fat intake is also a good idea.

If there was weight gain during treatment, women should endeavor to lose it and get back to their normal weight, because being overweight after diagnosis increases the chances of recurrence.

And, according to the National Institute of Health, EXERCISE, 5 times a week, can lower the risk of recurrence by as much as 50%! And this is not running marathons- it can be walking for 30 minutes every day.

One important thing to do is if you are on a hormonal drug, like tamoxifen, stay on it. Because the hormonal drugs surely do protect us if our cancer is spurred on by the estrogen in our bodies.

I like knowing that there are things that I can actively do to help prevent recurrence, and I hope that maybe it eases your mind a bit.

    ((hugs))
