I am awaiting results to see if I am high risk. I am stage 1, no nodes, grade 1 so there is a good chance I will come back low risk. My mom died of BC in 2006. She was a month shy of her 72 birthday so they do not think it adds to my risk but they are concerned because I am 36.

Please pray for me that I come back low risk.

I assume your awaiting the results of the Oncotype DX....I was stage II, due to tumor size, no nodes, 46 yrs old, grade 1....my test score was 12 so I turned down chemo and moved on to radiation and tamoxifen.

    Hoping the best for you.

Thank you ladies. You made me feel better Jule. It is the Oncotype. I know my oncologist said 11 would be considered low risk so you are very close.

Good luck to the both of you.

Is the Oncotype test done with a blood test?  Is it typically done for someone that has nodes negative to determine if chemo is an option?

The test is for patients with er/pr+, lymph node negative cancer.  Oncotype, as I understand it, uses a specimen of the original tumor, the original path reports, and updated reports.  They look at 23 (?) different gene markers of the tumor then combine all this data to determine a score.  16 and below is low risk, 17-29 is intermediate risk and 30 and above is high risk for recurrence.  Scores do help the patient and doctor determine whether chemo is a necessary regimen.

According to my onc, below 16 is generally no chemo.  17-29 is a grey area and subject to debate.  30 and up, definitely chemo.  Check out their website for a look at a sample test.  Beware that some insurance companies won't cover the test, even when the onc recommends it and it is expensive.  Genomic is good at going to battle with insurance companies, though.

Txgrl01 - thanks for the info, I guess my one node positive (I hope only one) should get my path report today for my full dissection done last week, rules me out of getting that test.  Carol

    Carol,

You may not be out of the running for the test just yet....Ask your oncologist, but Ive been reading that they are using it with node positive cancers as well.....call today and check with your drs office, maybe they can get you into one of the trials for this....

I will be watching our other thread for news of your path report today.....my thoughts and hopes will be with you for good news....

I just heard yesterday that my insurance is going to pay for the test 100%! Yeah! The test is $3,650. That's a lot of money for 1 test.

I should know within 2 weeks. By doctor said Jan 3 as the day. Thanks everyone for your prayers. I will let you know.
