An Officers Life......
You wonder why he pulled you over and gave you a ticket for speeding"
He just worked an accident where people died because they were going to fast
_________________________You wonder why that cop was so mean
He just got done working a case where a drunk driver killed a kid
____________________________________________You work for 8 hours
He works for up to 18 hours
_________________________You drink hot coffee to stay awake.
The cold rain in the middle of the night keeps him awake.
__________________________You complain of a "headache", and call in sick.
He goes into work still hurt and sore from the guy he had to fight the night before
__________________________You drink your coffee on your way to the mall.
He spills his as he runs code to a traffic crash with kids trapped inside
__________________________You make sure you're cell phone is in your pocket before you leave the house.
He makes sure his guns is clean and fully loaded and his vest is tight
__________________________You talk trash about your "buddies" that aren't with you.
He watches his buddy get shot at, and wounded in front of him.
__________________________You walk down the beach, staring at all the pretty girls.
He walks down the highway looking for body parts from a traffic crash
_________________________You complain about how hot it is.
He wears fifty pounds of gear and a bullet proof vest in the middle of July and still runs around chasing crack heads
__________________________You go out to lunch, and complain because the restaurant got your order wrong.
He runs out before he gets his food to respond to an armed robbery.
__________________________You get out of bed in the morning and take your time getting ready.
He gets called out of bed at 2 am after working 12 hours and has to be into work asap for a traffic homicide
__________________________You go to the mall and get your hair redone.
He holds the hair of some college girl while shes puking in the back of his patrol car
__________________________You're angry because your class ran 5 minutes over.
His shift ended 4 hours ago and there's no end in sight
__________________________You call your girlfriend and set a date for tonight.
He can't make any plans because on his off days he still gets called back into work
__________________________You yell and scream at the squad car that just past you because they slowed you down.
He's in the driver seat of the squad car, going to cut somebody out of their car only to find out that their dead when he gets there.
__________________________You roll your eyes when a baby cries in public
He picks up a dead child in his arms and prays that it was crying
__________________________You criticize your police dept and say they're never there quick enough.
He blasts the siren while the person in front of him refuses to move while talking on their cell phone and doing their makeup.
__________________________You hear the jokes about fallen officers and say they should have known better.
He is a hero and runs into situations when everyone else is running away in order to make sure no one else gets hurt and lose's his life doing it
__________________________
You are asked to go to the store by your parents. You don't.
He would take a bullet for his buddy without question
__________________________You sit there and judge him, saying that its a waste of money to have them around.
Yet as soon as you need help he is there

This is so true. I have a friend at church who is a city police officer and I am sure he has done all of this. Thank you for helping us to remember. Bonny

We have a buddy who is a hi way patrol officer. I'll never know how much courage it takes for any of the officers to walk up to the side of a stopped car, never knowing what they will find or if they will live thru that traffic stop.
I thanked a trooper for stopping me once. I was very tired and doing 80 in a high traffic area. I could have killed not only myself but someone else as well. It was truly worth the 100bucks to stay alive.
I think back to my youth 20-30"s and remeber all the times we drove home from parties with the windows down to keep us awake after a lot of drinking. I cringe when I remember that we could have killed our kids parents, or someone else's parents.
I have drilled into my kids heads: seatbelts and No driver drinks. the seatbelts saved my son from being decapitated when he drove after drinking as a college student 2 days before graduation. He's never driven after drinking since. I just thank God he was allowed that mistake and lived thru it.
If not for our cops (my Dad was a motorcycle cop as a young man) and my nephew is one, we would have so few lives saved. God bless them all and keep them safe. And be with their families as they wait for them to finish their shifts and come home safely.

This put a few tears in my eyes. My oldest son, all of 24 is with the NYPD . He loves it, but it's a scary job. Randi

Hi evilelf! I miss your avatar - on the wings of hope!
I'm from a "law enforcement family" so I especially appreciated this post (I am just now seeing it). Thank you for posting this, it's close to my heart.
Several of my cousins are PO's, and my Mom's brother, my most favorite Uncle, Bruce, was killed in the line of duty along with his partner in Chicago, while responding to a routine call. Both were only 28 years old.
You reference the word "he" in your post, but one of my cousins, a PO, is a she! LOL I am so proud of her...she's soft spoken and only stands 5'4" tall, but she is very good at her job and very dedicated as well. She snuck over while on duty to visit us for our x-mas get-together:

What a great pic of your cousin!
That's a great post evilelf!
My dad is a retired SF Police officer ... he worked undercover (total different life) and we could never tell anyone that our daddy was a p.o. He had long hair and a beard. Back in the 60's you can imagine the looks he got with his scruffy look and his pretty wife with 2 little blonde girls. Looks of "shame on you" and here he was risking his life. He had a gun at his head, the man pulled the trigger and my dad was praying for his life and soul. The gun jammed. The whole thing made his cover even more solid ...
We never know all the things these fine women and men do for us everyday.

my brother is a police officer.
that is sweet.
-
I pray for my cousins and all law enforcement personnel. Both boy and girl~ LOL. My heart is with them every day, every hour!

AMEN..... Evil)
My good friend's son
is a Police Officer
in.. one of the most crime-ridden areas
here
Roctobermom: I resided in S. F. during the sixties
and know about the Haight Ashbury then, it was not
bad at one time, but then became v. drug infested
Loved San Fran then though..
Best wishes ... to all -
Wonderful piece. And I also say the He should be changed to "she". My baby girl is a cop. All 5'2" of her. She works in a rough little city, and I am as proud as I am scared. Its hard to think about her dealing with the crack heads and other crazies. I went on a ride along with her one night and she spent an entire 8 hrs with a dead body she found during a routine call. Not the usual thing you expect your 24 yr old "baby girl" to be doing.

This is a very good post. Thanks for the reminder.
