the 10,000 step program for daily walking?

Our college is starting this in January 08. We already have 114 employees and 80 students signed up. Since we are in Northern California (near San Jose), our target is walking to San Diego, which would be 15,417 daily steps. I'm not that ambitious this time around. So I am aiming for 9,242 steps to Santa Barbara (a lovely place to visit if you haven't already). We will be given pedometers and instructions on how to use. We will each determine our stride (mathematically) and set our baseline by strapping on the pedo and walking for a day through our normal routine.

Here's the website:

it's free, and there are lots of positive stories on the site. Looks like it was developed in Australia.

I do water aerobics 5-7 days a week. Want to track my walking and add that to my long range goal of losing 50 lbs. Also hope to add a Tai Chi class in the Spring (taught at the college where I work).

Right now I'm on disability and need to get stronger in order to return to work. I'm one of the gals on the board who is 3.5 years NED, with truncal and rt. arm/hand Lymphedema and on a lot of pain meds.

I think this will be a fun way to challenge myself and try to return to work next year.

    Grace,

That sounds like a grat program! Having a "mappable" goal is wonderful motivation. I wore a pedometer for a while, and was amazed at how many steps I got in on an average day--without being at the gym.

I also found that I was more willing to walk and move when I was wearing the pedometer. I wanted to see those steps add up!

    Good luck!!

    Anne
