Until now, I've always just had an utra sound type of test for Herceptin.  This time the Onc ordered a Muga Scan, not sure why.  Anyone want to share experiences?  Do you have to do anything to prepare, fast, ect?

    Thanks,

    Kasey

    Hey Kasey,

my experience w/ the muga was prior to starting my chemo(tac)

the test is nuclear and they do the prep when you get there-- one shot wait a few minutes and then the test-- it is kinda like a mri on your heart to see how well your heart pumps and circulates!!! one of the easiest test  I have had.

    Best of Luck

I finished Herceptin a year ago so have had lots of Mugas. My oncologist feels it's more accurate than any other heart test. My advice is to drink lots of water beforehand, come in well rested and practice a meditation technique while you're on the plank. The only time my test was marginal was when I came in stressed out and dehydrated. It's really not bad. And the aim, of course, is to ensure your good health. Good luck! Nagem

Hi girls....just wanted to throw this out...I had 2 echos and my onc wanted a MUGA for the third one as my L boob and L lung kept getting the way.  I had one scheduled for 12/5 but the cardiologist's office had to cancel it as there is a world-wide shortage of the radioisotope they use in the injection and they couldn't get any.  The hospital had it but it was in such severe short supply and as I had no cardiac problems I would be put on the waiting list.  I just did another echo instead.  So maybe you guys won't be able to get a MUGA either.

Something about the plant in Canada leaking or something, and it had to be shut down.

A Muga doesn't amount to much, get a shot wait a little while and then get another, lay on a table while some machine whirrs and hums - they do several views.  I fell asleep during mine.  But there is a shortage of the radioisotope they use, so it may get cancelled and you might have the echo.

The reason he is ordering the MUGA is to look at your heart and lung function. Why is it that I always have the urge to lookup "MUGA" in the urban dictionary? It just sounds like a 4 letter word.Embarassed
