O/T re: Cleaning agents.. Bathroom area

Options

Hi everyone:

What agents do you use in bathroom

cleaning?

I am having someone do my bathroom

but they want to use the heavy chemical

method (for which I will be departing the

apartment) also, have my carpet to do soon

and will have to leave due to the fumes

v. expensive to have it done (by natural method)

Any suggestions welcomed

I am not in U.S.

TIA

Sierra :))

Sierra...I use Bon-Ami cleanser in my tub and sink and Method (Target environmentally-friendly brand) all-purpose cleaning spray for the rest of the bathroom. I do use a strong toilet bowl cleaner (Lysol), but only for a few minutes and try not to breathe in the fumes.

I haven't been in my house long enough to have the carpets cleaned, but they're getting close to needing it and I guess I'm putting it off because of this very issue. I don't want to create a toxic environment for myself or my cats, so what is one to do? Do they really have natural methods for cleaning carpets?

White vinegar can work wonders for all sorts of cleaning.

Oh, I forgot my favorite cleaner!  Bar Keepers Friend.  It does have oxalic acid or something that fumes a bit but if you are careful it does the best job of cleaning sinks you can imagine.  I think it is also wonderful for toilets if you get in there with rubber gloves and a sponge.  Much better than those toilet cleaners which I hate.

Yes, yes Bar Keepers Friend, like Bon Ami, wonderful for a quicker riddance of the scum! Lysol, hmm, I've been wondering about a better toilet agent.

And Sierra, when the knees give out, or the hips won't bend, or your joints ache (pretty much covers us all, doesn't it?) I suggest vacuuming everywhere first (so, you just get a new or used vacuum from a thrift shop, maybe just for the bathroom) and then you buy those cheap wood scrub brushes with flexible nylon, some are used by hand and others are on a long handle so it reaches where you can't and go to it! (Except for the toilet bowl, lol).

These tips have helped me shorten my time and my pain on the old bathroom game!

For stains (like rust and such in kitchen sink) use equal parts hydrogen peroxide and water, add some baking soda and a little dish soap. Let soak, then scrub. You can also a paste of it. I have mostly hard wood floors and haven't cleaned my carpet upstairs since I've been here but I'm sure there is an environmentally friendly carpet cleaning company out there somewhere! I found an environmentally friendly lawn care company and wouldn't use ChemLawn or any other chemical on my lawn now that I know better.....

When I was about to start chemo I looked into Merry Maids but nixed that idea when they said they only use 'their' products and wouldn't use vinegar or any non-toxic cleaner I would supply.

There are alternate methods and products out there, we just have to search a little harder to find them. Bon Ami is still around for a reason!

Jaybird, your store has some fantastic cleaning products. They are gentle, but very effective. And the Mrs Meyers line smells fabulous!I have a bottle of Mrs Meyers Rose Geranium scented hand dishwashing soap which I am HOARDING, since I bought it at TJ MAXX for only &3.50.The scent is outrageously wonderful!

And I use ECOver brand stuff for all my cleaning. The hand washing dish soap has marigolds in it!

I have a coupon for the toilet cleaner even now (fromMambo Sprouts.) And the bathroom cleaner is very nice too.

Gotta say it again--Whole Foods rocks!!

Oh.seirra is in Canada.Well a dear friend is taking a PHD in Canada. She tells me here is an enormous WF in Toronto!

    NO SHOWER STALL SPRAY!!!!

Sierra, please go to Whole Foods. They have a beautiful spray (yes) for the tile walls of your shower, after the last shower of the day.

Being sold at Whole Foods, it has NO CHEMICALS!!(WF wont sell chemicals) It's made of very good, natural oils and tinctures.Orange peel essence is in it, I know.(Cant get up & go get bottle)Bottom line?It WORKS!!Shiny clean tiles,no soap scum, no mildew, nice smell.Price-a few cents more than the chemicals. And SO worth it, you'll agree!

If there is no Whole Foods near you, you can buy these effective natural products at Health Food stores!

I dont have to tell you the chemicals are bad for the earth, and our waterways, as well as bad for us personally.

I use the same soap I use on my body to clean my shower/tub and lavatory sink.  I put a squirt of shampoo in the bottom of the toilet bowl brush holder, and swipe once a day. I use vinegar when the calcium build up gets noticeable (I have very hard water).  Soap is soap, can't see the sense in spending money on chemical cleaners that don't seem to work any better than regular soap and shampoo.
