So said J. K. Rowling in a question/answer session yesterday in New York.

I can't wait to see how the 'religious right' reacts to this. Probably going to go into a meltdown over it.

Only the fringe.  I consider myself part of the 'religious right' and my reaction is 'big deal.'  :)

I haven't read any of the harry potter books, but still think it's cool. Glad to hear your reaction always hope Smile! I thought the fringe wanted the book banned from schools anyway because of the magic/witchcraft component. GMA had a reporter at some fringe conference on "family" and this man said (paraphrased), "Sexuality has no business in children's literature, particularly homosexuality." I don't think he understood that sexual orientation doesn't necessarily equate to talking about or having SEX.

I think it's hysterical how big of a story this is on the NEWS-- a character in a popular book is gay even though it never says so in the book. Rowlings said she hopes this will teach tolerance-- I think it would have had a better chance of doing so if the character was actually out in the book.

I've read all the books and I've seen all the movies.  My one concern is did Richard Harris know he was portraying a gay man when he took on the role?  I have daughters who tell me he did and that there were really not very subtle hints throughout all the books and movies, but even though I'm a lesbian, (maybe a really thick one, LOL) I never caught on.  Obviously, I'm not one to judge, but it might have been better to have made him more blatantly gay (I don't know how, just maybe state that he was.  I'm not looking for stereotypes here, just more than "hints"); I think J.K. Rowling has the actual power to make gay okay.

I agree about making the character more stereotypically gay.

Madalyn-- guess you haven't met one of my best friends' sisters. When she found out I was gay she told my friend she didn't want her kids around me, even though we spent a lot of time together previously and her kids loved me.

Here we go---- some catholic schools in the USA are calling for Harry Potter books to be be removed because of Dumbledore. I'm not surprised--disappointed especially since his sexual orientation is never even mentioned in the book. Decisions like this make me wonder whether we'll ever have our equal rights. The articles I found were about Massachusetts, but I also heard about it locally on the news too.

So was I. I always felt some kinship with her - being a bit weird myself.
