Magnesium Pidolate>Vit D>Calcium
Following some good advice given here on the bc.org Boards, I tried a magnesium suppliment to relieve depression. I found that it did more than that....it relieved joint pain. That almost seemed too good to be true. The conversation is found in more detail on the Hormonal Therapy thread "P450-Arimidex-Anti depressives-Aromasin".
Tender is our Might asked for information about dose, etc. of the magnesium. I offered what I knew at the time. But since then, I found this web site that was informative on the subject...

Briefly...hypothyroid + arthritis + BC + Arimidex (2 yrs.) = debilitating joint pain + depression. I wanted very much to change this equation. I took calcium carbonate and D3...but probably did not have enough magnesium in my system and this is necessary for "optimum performance" of calcium and D3 in the body. Balance of the three components and absorption by the body are important too.
It seems that Vit D can be have both an adverse and beneficial affect with magnesium. Too much of any good thing creates other problems. So, as with all the best advice in the world "Everything in Moderation". Suppliments are just as the word defines .... "added to" our daily intake of required nutrition for a healthy body. They can't "take the place of" healthy lifestyle and food.
It seems to me too that these issues are further complicated by hypothyroid. This is why "one size does NOT fit ALL".....very important to remember. We can't measure ourselves by another's yard stick....nor is it in our best interest to beat ourselves with it!
Rosemary44 and Blinded by Science, among others, are far more informed on these topics. I am grateful to their insights, because I feel so much better today for their efforts.

I'm not too sure about D3 having an adverse effect with magnesium. I can't find anything out there with any type of warning about it. What I did find is D3 is probably not necessary for magnesium absorption, and that's all.
I wonder why the makers of that mag your using would give a warning? It's sold in Canada, I wonder if that warning is given there also? We need a Canadian to buy some and give us the low down.

I went back to the magnesio pidolato information pamphlet …. The information about vit D3 is found under the topic “Which healing or nutriment can modify the effects of the medicine” ….. then it reads <<In the case of administration concomitant of magnesium and colecalciferolo (Vitamin D3), . advise the control of the calcium to avoid the possible emergence of hyper-calcium.>>
Rosemary, I think it’s a question of absorption. The endocrinologist recounted that vit D needs to be passed through the body….she advised exercise to help with that and to take a walk in the sun to get both the exercise and the Vit D….the sun is abundant in this region. They also often recommend to go to the sea.
If I understand the relationships, magnesium contributes to absorption of both calcium and vit D ….so it seems that the levels of all need to be in good balance or we feel the results of the imbalance. Given all of the variables between genetics, diet, lifestyle and other maladies of the body, it’s no wonder that the research has a difficult time to pin down definitive results of benefits/non benefit. I’m satisfied that they understand the mechanisms and relay what they do know in a manner understandable to a lay person like myself.
As I read through this information, I understand better how my body is feeling and why. It’s been a very good exercise. Not the least is that I strengthened my Italian looking for the translations (lol). Tender IOM congratulated me on my “fluency”….I’m far from it I can tell you. But I’ve learned to appreciate this language…it’s very specific…like medicine….and there is not direct translation for every word of Italian to English. It’s fun…and good health for the brain.
On the link is www.peacehealth.org. I searched magnesium pidolate….the search brought me > “magnesium” … I read through and followed the link > “osteoporosis” … scrolled down to “check list” and “diet” ….. a couple of paragraphs after “Vit K” I found this paragraph…..
“In a preliminary study, people with osteoporosis were reported to be at high risk for magnesium malabsorption. Both bone and blood levels of magnesium have been reported to be low in people with osteoporosis. Supplemental magnesium has reduced markers of bone loss in men. Supplementing with 250 mg up to 750 mg per day of magnesium arrested bone loss or increased bone mass in 87% of people with osteoporosis in a two-year, controlled trial. Some doctors recommend that people with osteoporosis supplement with 350 mg of magnesium per day”
