Please pray for my girlfriend....my hero

She has been fighting breast cancer since September 2004...oh my god what a fight and she has NEVER once gotten good news.  Her mother passed away 3 days before her first mastectomy..so that's how her battle started..but she has persevered, remained upbeat through it all.  She would show up unexpectedly at my chemos with slide shows for me to watch and encouraged me in so many ways...although she has suffered every chemo side effect you can imagine, including congestive heart failure.   She has beaten her life expectancy by 1 year.  I just learned last Friday she got the worst possible news.   I am devastated.   She is 49.

I'm so sorry gsg -  I'm praying for your girlfriend - and for YOU.  You have had too many people fighting for their lives in too short of a period of time. My heart goes out to you and to your friend (and all her family and friends).

    Hugs & prayers,

    Doreen

thanks so much for everybody's prayers.  my girlfriend is still with us and fighting.

it has been a bad year.  my best friend since 7th grade, 51-year-old single mother of a 15-year-old, has been diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer and given 9 mos to 1 year to live.  i'm beside myself with hatred of and frustration with this disease.

i'm losing 2 of my very close friends and lost my stepdad to kidney cancer this past April. (8 weeks from diagnosis to his death)

I can not fathom so many losses and sickness in one year of people so intimately close to you, including your stepdad, gsg.

I so feel for you, and your friends with this terrible disease. I hate cancer, always, in every way, I will never emotionally disengage from my hatred of it. What it does to us.. the fight that you have to take on with it...it's like a deadly tango, with only one of the two dancers, the cancer or the person, ultimately winning.

I will pray for your friends, their dear children, their spouses and of course you.

    Tender

Thanks for the thoughts & prayers.  I called her house & heard her voice on the message.  It's like I want to keep calling the number and just listening to it.

Even when you know it's coming, it still stuns you when it happens.  Plus, she kept defying the odds.  They told her her life expectancy was until 9/06.  She beat it by more than a year.  I didn't want her to suffer, but I wanted her to keep beating it.  She didn't want to go and we wanted to keep her here.  OMG I can't believe she's gone.

I am sorry to hear another angel has risen because of this disease. I pray for peace for you and her family, as such might be had, in the midst of such a tremendous loss of another life.

We are there with you, gsg, feeling the full effect. Let us take the time to mourn, and then, in proper time, get back to the task of engagement on helping to fund, fine, and be witness to, breast cancer's cure or true chronicity.

    Saddened,

    Tender

Your words really do mean so much to me.  Thank you.  I was just sitting here thinking about the stuff she did for me when I was first diagnosed.  She kind of took control.  She even went with me to the "chemo class" my onc's office gives before you start.  I could tell the nurse was wishing Pam would be quiet, but the nurse, who is a sweetheart, listened to her patiently and Pam grilled her relentlessly...RELENTLESSLY.  LOL.  By that time, Pam was a chemo expert and she wanted to make sure I got the best care.  It was Pam who recommended I get a port...they don't automatically recommend that where I went.  Thank God she did.  I can't imagine going through chemo without it.  She loaded me up with all the teas & mints that made her feel better...creams for my skin during rads, etc.

She and I & her life partner traveled to the Middle East together in 2003 and had THE BEST TIME.  We laughed so loudly in our rooms, we were worried we were going to get thrown out of the hotel.  I can't believe Pam is on the other side now.  It doesn't seem real.  I've been friends with her since 1989.

As the song goes..there's a hole in the world tonight.

just got home a bit ago, next to my desk is her handwriting on something,  i keep looking at it...and i'm reading all the e-mails she sent me during my own chemo.  so many tests she went through, chemo for 3 years, crummy side effects, pain, weight gain, heart attack, and she's all happy & upbeat in her notes...always hopeful ....and telling ME to keep my chin up....my breast cancer compared to hers was like having a bad cold.  she was completely ravaged.

and yet i can't believe they couldn't save her.  i want her back.  i'm not ready for her to be gone yet.

    gsg,

this is so heart-breaking and i am so sad for you.  What i am struck with is the incredible friendship that you have shared.  I have a best friend since i was 6 years old and even tho i rarely see her in person (we live on opposite coasts), we are like soul sisters.  It sounds like you were both engraved in each other's hearts and have enriched each other's lives for a long time.  Try to remind yourself of the total blessing it was to have her in your life at all.  Visualize filling that empty hole in your heart with your memories and the blessing of her friendship.

thanks to everybody.  we are losing too many women to this disease and there's so much focus on it.  god bless the people who continue to research it.  one day they'll find a cure.  i just wish it had been here in time to save pam, all the others we have lost and those who are now fighting for their lives.
