hi,

i have always took toprol xl.  well last month my insurance would not cover it. instead of the pharmacist asking me to pay they went ahead and called my doctor who switched me to atenolol . i was first taking 25mg same as the toprol . well i was horribly tired . the doctor said take half which helps but i still am tired. i think alot of my tiredness is the different ingredient. i take it cause i have panic attacks and my thyroid causes my heart to race sometime.  does anyone else take atenolol ?   does it help you? how long do you stay tired?    i am sorry for posting about this here. every since mom had her breast cancer 3 yrs ago you all have been great.  thanks for any info.

I've taken Atenolol for about 5 years and it has never made me tired. I started out on 50mg, but it was cut to 25mg while I was doing chemo and since my BP stayed normal, I haven't had to increase it again. I'm sorry that you've had this side effect, but it does slow down your heart rate somewhat so it makes sense that you'd feel fatigued, at least until your body adjusts to it.

Do you take thyroid meds too? I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and take thyroid hormone. If the dose is too low, I get tired easily. Maybe you should have your thyroid checked, if you haven't done so..?

I take Toprol XL.  They now have it in a generic.  I can't imagine why your insurance won't pay for it since the generic just came out.  I take mine for palpatations.  It also helps my bp.

I have been on atenolol for many years now.  I have never been sleepy from this drug.  I intially was put on it to help ease hot flashes and I have to admit I seems to work.  I went into surgical menopause overnight and never have suffered from hot flashes.

thanks everyone for replying .  i think i worry about change.  one good thing is i do not have to take as much of the atenolol.

my thyroid medicine had been increased to 100mcg about 2 months ago.  my thyroid seems to be crazy.  they always do the tsh test. i thought about asking if they could check more about my thyroid . they said my thyroid was dying out. i wonder if i will feel worse.

with the atenolol i thought about it. if i don't like it by the time i go back to the dr i will have them put me back on toprol xl and pay.

I've been taking Atenelol for 7 or 8 years now - started when the stress at the marina where I worked got the best of me.  BP is coming down - but they are keeping me at 50mg.   It doesn't make me tired, thank heavens - in fact I had to switch the time I take it from night to day because it was wiring me so badly I couldn't sleep.
