A comparable site for lung cancer??
The husband of a colleague of mine has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Does anyone know of a site (as supportive, informative and generally all around terrific as breastcancer.org is for us) that could help them?? Any suggestions most gratefully received. Jo

I would doubt it, sadly. I was just reading The Cure magazine. It talked about how the 5 year survival for b.c. for everyone (lumping everyone in together) is 88% while the 5 year survival rate for lung cancer is only 15%. That and the fact that lung cancer moves swiftly means that the voices of the victims is not heard for long.
It makes sense...... with so many bc survivors, we just keep yelling and yelling for a cure. Sadly, there is a stigma with lung cancer yet the magazine said 60% of those dx are non-smokers (didn't say never-smokers). Dana Reeves was among the NEVER-smokers. -
I really don't think there's ANY site comparable to this one and certainly not one nearly as populated. But there area few sites where people with lung cancer can post. He might try this one: http://www.acscsn.org/Forum/Discussion/?msgrid=4
OR search these for the message board specific to lung cancer:
http://www.cancercompass.com/
OR the message board associated with this site that looks pretty good:
http://lchelp.org/
I wish him well and hope that he can find the kind of wonderful support that we enjoy here!

Thanks Marin for the suggestions, and both of you for your concern. Yes, I fear for the future for my friend's husband, but then again, statistics are just numbers, and he is a healthy man in himself. My prayer list gets longer, and cancer takes from us again! The community here though has given me more than I would ever have imagined possible - support, validation, you name it. Even with the poorer prognoses for other types of cancer you wish all could have what we find here. Jo

I know several people who have survived lung cancer. the key seems to be the stage at which it is diagnosed. Some cancers, like bc, can be beaten or controlled even if advanced. Lung cancer has to be caught early.

MOTC, I was reading about it in the Cure, but still unclear as to why there is not screening for lung cancer. When so many never-smokers are getting it and so many of them are women, I just wonder why they don't do scans of some sort so they can find it early.
My grandmother died of lung cancer, she smoked but her cancer was not a smoking-related type. I don't remember what kind it was. I just remember my aunt being up in arms with everyone who kept telling her to quit and she kept pointing at my Grandma as proof of "ya never know what kind of cancer you will get" .... -

I always feel bad for people with lung cancer, because of the stigma and wonder if these patients internalize some of that shame and that's why they aren't clamoring for a cure the way bc survivors are. I don't hope your friend finds unconditional support without judgment, whether a smoker or not. -
I was reading a magazine at the oncologists' office a few weeks ago and looked up the website afterwards. I think it's fairly new, so there's not so much traffic as here, but I've already received some great information from a nutritionist there. Like here, there's different sections, and it appears to be open to posts for all kinds of cancers. Hope this helps... www.caring4cancer.com

There is a very supportive community of patients and caregivers affected by all cancers at www.npr.org/blogs/mycancer/index.html . It is Larry Siever's blog - very well written. He was one of those on Ted Koppel's 'Living With Cancer' special a few weeks ago along with Lance Armstrong and Elizabeth Edwards.

My ex-husband was just diagnosed with stage 1 small cell lung cancer. Our daughter is going to be his primary care giver - along with her half brother and his wife. There's a lot of freaking out going on - the half brother is certain he's going to die (because people with cancer die - idiot! ). I'll refer them to these sites.
Tomorrow they all meet with his doctor together with him. He's 78 - and has alway been strong as an ox and stubborn as a mule. He was still riding his mountain bike several times a week - so hopefully his constitution will help him through this.
