I called the number and they said the only way they do free testing is if a family member has previously been tested and you have a number .

Thank you, I will pass this along to my hesitant brother and daughter. He would like to know, but wants to find a way to do it so that no insurance company is involved. This may be the way!
I have already lost one sister, my other sister tested negative, so I am very hopeful for these two.

I would tell them the next time you call that your onocologist told you to order kit, you dont have to give them any more info. . Its just a person answering phone. . . .Please again let me know if you have problems, I"LL CALL FOR YOU...lol. . .GREAT lv2cmp - Good Luck!!

    Kim,

Thats all I did. I called and said my oncologist suggested that I call and request the free BRAC test kit. She said oh ok, let me get your address and you will have it in 5-7 days. She said once the test is received you can go to lab to have blood work pulled in your area.

Okay - I'm BRCA-1 positive, have my mutation # and everything, but no go on the FREE tests for family members. We don't 'qualify' for the free testing. It seems that there are only a few 'strains' for which they are offering this. Only certain mutations within the gene where they want to do further research. So, it's certainly worth a call to find out, but it's not universally available to BRCA families, durn it!

Whoa . . . I really think it is a bad idea to do the genetic testing without genetic counseling. It is really important to have someone speak with you about all teh possible implications and what you are going to do with the information.

Our own veggievetsue started an organization called FORCE (I believe the website is facingourrisk.org) to help woman with these issues. I urge you to visit their website and learn about where to go for genetic counseling before you make this kind of decision.

I think genetic counseling would be helpful for those who have questions, but there are a lot of women who are well educated about the risks and implications and people probably know themselves well enough to know which category they fit into.
