My job

Hey everyone been doing some thinking. Ever since having Samuel I've realized that I really need to be happy in my whole life. Yes I'd thought about this before, but having him really put my life into perspective. Well that leads to my job. I'm a 7th grade English teacher - have been for 13 years now. (wow that sounds long). Well for about the last three years I've slowly realized it's not exciting me any more - that maybe it's time for a change. Not sure what tho. That's what I'm searching for now - the "what else" I might want to do. I almost went back and got my media specialist degree last summer, but decided not to - thankfully or I wouldn't been in the middle of it when I had Samuel

So what am I getting at? Not sure just thinking out loud kinda. I've started looking at different places now like community colleges, hospitals (some days I wish I had become a nurse), and other jobs in education but not a full classroom teacher. Any one have other ideas for me? I'm going to apply for anything that really interests me. I'll deal with getting out of my teaching job if it comes to that.

Any ideas would be great.

I've always thought that when I needed to change something I needed to take a class. In something that had nothing to do with what I DO. Since I'm a nurse, it was usually in the arts, not science.
I also sought volunteer work in alternative areas: nothing to do with my profession. (except for sometimes on this site)
    Just some thoughts.

thats tough, guess you need to really look hard, do you enjoy your teaching? Is it that you are burnt out in teaching your current grade English or is it teaching all together that you are burnt out on? I am not a teacher, but loved teaching in social service settings. It is such a good feeling to help people get out of bad settings and move their lives forward. Social service is not where money is but it is fulfulling work. You can also get opened up to a whole range of different job types when you get into that field.

Start a list and keep it with you. When you see something you think you might like, write it down. Develop your list and then start checking into what you might be able to do. I know there are tests you can take where you answer questions. Based on your answers it will give you ideas in the fields you are passionate about. I started out orginally studying to be an accountant and ended up doing database design over the years. Good luck in your search.

Jill...Since you're attracted to health care AND have the teaching background, maybe something in health education would suit you? As a mother of young children, you could concentrate on maternal health care and do things like help underpriveledged kids gain better access to services like immunizations, screenings, etc.

I find that some of my most illuminating moments occur whlie daydreaming or fantasizing myself doing things. Pay attention to what you dream about, or (this isn't really morbid, is it?) imagine what your obituary would say about you....what would you like to be remembered as besides, of course, being an awesome person, spouse, mom, daughter, sister, friend, etc.?

Take your time and the answer will come. Have fun with it!

    Hi Jill,
I, too, am a teacher--have taught English for 35 yrs. This year is it--I am going to retire since my youngest will graduate from college in Dec--yahoo! I have been widowed for 12 yrs and know when I am done teaching, I will have to find another job to fill the void and for some money to keep supporting myself and disabled son. I want something that has nothing to do with teaching. I just need to try something a little bit different.

I am a former jr. high school teacher as well. I now work as a Human Resources Manager. Teaching is a great background for many different fields. Good luck.

I taught for twenty five years and loved every minute of it. But after my husband died I knew I needed to make more money so I got another Master's degree in administration and became an administrator in human resources, interviewing and working with new teachers. Like teaching, I loved the job and had a wonderful career that lasted 35 years. I retired last year and was diagnosed one month after retiring.

Jill, I have nothing else to add except I sure am glad you haven't been in the news -- you know -- one of those teachers that take advantage of cute young boys. Of course, just kidding.

What I REALLY wanted to say is that Samuel (his avatar) is so adorable! I could just kiss those cheeks!
