Broccoli - A New Hope For Breast Cancer

Options
Epidemeological studies have confirmed that women who regularly consumer Brassica vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale) have a lower risk of breast cancer, especially estrogen dependent breast cancer.

Scientists are making progress in understanding the molecular basis of this phenomenon. There are three compounds in broccoli that they believe account for this: diindolylmethane, sulforaphane and selenium.

Diindolylmethane has recently been receiving a lot of attention in the scientific community because of its multi-factorial effect on breast cancer.

Here are some of the things this amazing natural molecule does:

1) Promotes a healthy estrogen metabolism that reduces the risk of cancer or its progression if one has one through the 2-hydroxylation of estrogen metabolites.

2) Promotes apoptosis - or automatic cell death for cancer cells -- no effect on normal cells

3) Reduces inflammation which exacerbates cancer

4) Modulates the immune system enabling the body to better detect where the problem is and fix it.

Ask your doctor about incorporating more Brassica vegetables in your diet or taking the active ingredients as supplements.

Wishing all health and wellness,

MD

Is this really new information? I was under the impression that cruciferous vegetables were well known for their anti-cancer properties.

I think the DIM post is simply a friendly marketing pitch from the folks at Activamune --the people who put up both web pages referenced in the first post.

There are other sources for DIM, so look around a bit if you're interested in trying it.
