Help!!! New on Board

Hello everyone. My name is Renae and I am new to this board. I am not a breast cancer patient, but I have very high concerns on the subject. Right now I am doing a paper in school on Breast Cancer and the medicines today vs. 20 years ago. The reason I chose this topic for my paper is because I want to learn as much as I can about Breast Cancer. My husband's mother and grandmother both died of Breast Cancer and now his cousin was just diagnosed with it. So far every female now in that blood line has gotten it. My daughter is now in that blood line. I am sure that you understand my willingness to learn as much as I can about Breast Cancer. The reason that I am on here is because I am having a hard time finding good, crediable websites. If anybody has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance for your time and Good Luck to everyone!!!

This site has many articles listed concerning breast cancer, just enter what you want to learn in the search box at the top.

Other good sites I've used is the Susan G Komen site, National Cancer Institute and American Cancer Society site. You can google any of these to find the web address.

There is so much information, I would get Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book, do not show it to any of the relatives with breast cancer, as some people do not like it. It does not mince words and scares some patients.

It would answer ALL of your questions and would help you plan for your daughter. I would think about 25 she should have a baseline mammogram and then one say, every five years after that. Just makes good sense. Not every year, she does not want to be exposed to all that radiation at such a young age.

You are a good mom to be concerned.

    Gentle hugs, Shirlann

I am also new on this board.  I don't have BC but my mom does, stage IV.  I am scared to death.  My mom is my best friend and I am so scared of losing her.  She has a lot of faith and is very positive.  I am trying to be positive but I am so scared.  I know the outlook is grim and it seems that every time we start something we hit a wall and we go backwards.  She has no hormones so we can't do the hormone therapy, my mom in her positive thinking says well there is a reason for everything and maybe something good will come out of this.

Luv Music, yes, this site and the Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book would be my first thoughts.  This site is so thorough and the book is complete.  Good luck on your paper.  Might it be possible to talk to a genetics professional about your dd's family history before you talk to her to learn her risk and what they suggest. I know my dd (is 25) and her risks scare the heck out of her!  She's learning, but certainly not wanting to deal it all at once, so please.....don't overwhelm your dd either.  How old is she?

Theresa?  So sorry about your mom.  Have you gone through the Mets and stage IV forums yet?  They could offer a great deal of information on how you can help your mom. Many {{ hugs}} to you both as you travel this difficult road.

Hi Renae. I  am a BC survivor. Also I have a very strong family history, My Mom, MY Grandmother and Greatgrandmother.  My MOM is a 29 year survivor!  She is 86 years old, and I plan to live as long!  You might want to check out Mammograms VS. Breast MRI"S. I had A MRI and a mammo done the same day, My mammo came back clear  BUT NOT my MRI!  My cancer was picked up by the MRI and my Dr. told me It would be a long time before it showed up on mammo. Take Bill1951's advice and research Breast cancer in men.  I had genetic testing done and was told the male can have the breast cancer gene and pass it on to his daughter or son.  I would be concerned for your daughter. Make sure she gets early sceening. Your husband could have the genetic testing done . I did not carry the gene, but that doesn't mean my Mom or sisters and brothers don't.  The test cost is around $3300.Unless your Ins. pays.  Breast MRI's are hard to get approved by Ins. Co. so one has to really persue it and be your own advocate! Good luck with your research, You will be amazed at how much there is to know.  Jeanie
