In my ignorance long ago, my sister (she is gay, I am not) and I had a conversation about health insurance. I remember the conversation really well, as it was a wake up call. And this was years ago. She was complaining about not being able to list her partner on her health insurance at work. My remark was something to the effect of "well- you're not married". (I said it was in ingorance.. I'm getting better)
soo.. my sister presented the arguement that it was NOT up to the insurance companies to decided who she could or couldn't name. If her and I were living together, even tho' we're sisters, she could not add me, yet a mother could add a son. A son (or daughter) could NOT name a parent! So it made sense to me.. it really shouldn't be some corporate idiot's decision who we name on our health insurance! WE ARE PAYING FOR THE COVERAGE, we should be able to name WHOMEVER WE WANT.
well, my sister's a lawyer and she's just smart like that lol
she helps me to see things that I would otherwise be judgemental of.
** and don't even get me started about health insurance companies and their PRE EXISTING CONDITION clauses!!
    GRRR!!!!

Health insurance is the country is broken for both the gay and straight. The only people it's fair to are the very rich who can afford to pay if insurance doesn't cover their procedures IMHO.

I can only cover my kids when they are my dependents. As soon as my daugther is out of college, she will be kicked off my insurance policy.
Our premium cover only a small portion of expense. Our companies contribute bulk of it, that is why they try to limit number of covered people.
In general US medical system is very expensive but we get stuff done quickly. If you look at Chicago, you will see a lot of medical facilities built to cater to Canadians who come south of border to take care of their medical needs as the social medicine does not work for them. I guess here it's again: the wealthy ones come south of border and get treated and the poor ones are left to fight socialized medicine. No perfect world anywhere (:

Those percentages for cancer are not accurate. Currently about 33% of women and 40% of men will get some form of cancer. The largest number is still from a preventable cause-smoking.As we age as a population the percentages will rise.AS death from heart disease declines more folks live long enough to develop cancer.Half of all breast cancer develops in women over 61 and they tend to do well. The real crime to me is that little money has been spent on the development of mets and the possible impact of current treatments on future met disease.Money and Fortune magazine had good discussions of how cancer dollars are misspent.

I just read in the newpaper that the state of Mass. has passed a law that everyone must have health insurance or they are fined form their tax returns. I was wondering if anyone here is from Mass and since they expect many to purchase their own policies, do the insurance companies there still not recognize pre-existing conditions? Kate

Even those of us who don't get a company subsidy on our insurance premiums are limited in who we can add as covered people...
