braca2 mutant gene

Genetic tests show 60% chance of recurrence within 5 years. Struggling with decision of bilateral mastectomy
or do radiation and take my chances. I am 51 years old.My mother died from breast cancer, so you can see witch way I am leaning. Any insight out there that may help?

I'm sorry you have had the mutation confirmed. Now it's decision time. BRCA-1 & 2 chances of recurrence increase with time - 60% within 5 years. Even if you beat those odds, what happens when you are 57 or 60, 64? I want to be as sure as I can be for as long as I can be - so I am having the bilateral mastectomies after finishing chemo. Good luck on this difficult decision.

Hi... I had bilat mast last May and found out I have the BRCA1 gene a few months ago... I am on Tamoxifan and will be having ovaries removed and hysterectomy... My daughter, who doesn't have bc, has the gene and is going to have her ovaries out. The risk of ovarian cancer s high if you have the gene and ovarian cancer isn't usually detected til it's too late. If you have the gene the breasts are easier to detect ca. I would definitely speak to your genetic counsellor.

Came back BRCA 2 positive - had bilateral - no regrets. I will also have ovaries removed within a year.

    Good luck in your decision.
