Wind knocked out of my sails

That's the only way I can describe it. I went to the onc yesterday for my herceptin infusion. He examined me and said he wants to get an echo done on my heart. Ok, no problem, I simply ask him if it will be okay for me to miss two herceptin treatments. His answer " I don't know if it will hurt you to miss any treatments, I don't know if it will help you to have these treatments, I can't guarantee you anything". Okay, I know that there are no guarantees for anything to do with cancer, but he really knocked the wind out of me with that statement. I've been trying to stay so upbeat and feel positive. This statement really did a job on me, I've been really down since yesterday thinking, what's the point of having all this done, then? Don't know if he was having a bad day or not but he sure ruined mine, I thought it was so inappropriate. I'm set up for a scope and a colonoscopy on Monday and I'm sitting here wondering "what's the point"?

What happened to his bed side manner??????? He must have left it at home. So sorry you are feeling so blue. I don't know anything about your treatments but just wanted you to know I will be thinking and praying for you as I do all of us on this board. Try not to let him keep you from having the tests necessary for your continued health. We are always here for you to keep you strong!!!

Let us know how Monday goes...

I'm sending a hug your way. What a HORRIBLE statement for a doctor to make. I won't call him a professional because he didn't act very professional.

I know we don't have any guarantees with any of these txs (except the negative ones). My onc tells me that the herceptin is decreasing my recurrance odds dramatically and always talks in a positive manner. This is our lifeline and how dare he try to yank it away. He's mean, throw rocks at him!

    Susan,
He sounds like a real jewel. Herceptin has brought about amazing results and we have every reason to believe it will help us, as well! This doc should be ashamed! You must have caught him at a bad time or your request to miss a couple infusions didn't sit right with him.

    Best of luck to you!

Maybe the guy had just been talking with his lawyer or something. I think he was giving you a "malpractice-proof" answer.

    Don't let it bother you.

Sending you big hugs! Herceptin has been proven to show disease free survival. None of us know how long we will be here, however, the results of herceptin has been great and worth having. Still waiting to here on the nine weeks of herceptin being as good as a year. I hope your echo is fine. Hang in there!

    Hugs,

Well! All I can say is some doctors are just pompous asses. What an awful thing to say to you.

I agree. So much of the negativity docs have to hand out is mainly CYA...to avoid any "you didn't tell me that" lawsuits down the line. It is sad that they have to give out so much of the possible BAD news, that it takes away from their true mission in their profession, to give hope.
