Curcumin

I have taken an active role in my own healing and decided to use the alternative and allopathic routes together. I have been on high doses of curcumin since dx (7/06) and other supplements and have finished A/C and this is the last week of Taxol. I was staged 3b due to supraclavicular/axillary involvement w/multiple large tumors in different quadrants of the breast. CAT/MRI scans last week showed no signs of cancer in either lymph areas and the last active tumor shrinking from 2cm to .7. I would say that curcumin has been a substantial part of my healing.

Wow peregrine, that is some great results you got there. I also had neoadjuvant chemo. I had a 4.5 cm tumor with positive nodes. After chemo the MRI showed that the tumor shrunk to about half. I also had another tumor that the MRI didn't pick up that was in a different quadrant of the breast and also a CIS. However, the PET/CT scan did show the smaller tumor before chemo began. That's why I chose mast over lumpectomy because we weren't sure if it was there are not.
I didn't take ANYTHING per onc's orders. I think there should be some studies on humans (who would like to participate) on taking tumeric during chemo.
Congrats on the great outcome!

need advice. I now have a bottle of...Turmeric 450 mg, herbal supplement capsules. Brand Rexall, take one daily 9curcuma longs) (root) 450 mg and turmeric extract 50 mg.
Want to try for pain from AI. How long before it should make a difference? And did I get the right one to use? -
Hey Abbie10
I was on 9 capsules of 450 mg/cap per day. I still am. If that helps. Take care and blessings. -
Dear Peregrine -- that is awesome news! I did three rounds of Abraxane (for a couple of mets) and i'd say I took 1 to 2.5 grams of curcumin (with bioperine) about 75% as well as 3 grams of Omega-3 daily 100% of the time and my scans came back clean. Of course, I live in fear of what was not on the scans! What other supplements did you take? I am doing D3 and have just started Co Q10. Cheers, Snarky

Hey Snarky...
The list has been endless really but I will try. CoQ10 at 175mg, green tea extract (standardized), milk thistle (300mg), vit E (1000mg), Vit c (2500mg), Vitex (due to menopause induced by chemo), Ginko (120 mg), multi vitamin, Dr. Christophers proprietary formulas for: kidney, liver & gallbladder, pancreas, blood stream, green powder (barley, wheat grass etc), alpha lipoic acid, Vit A &D, Flaxseed meal and 3000 mg, Probiotics, Digestive enzymes, Hawthorn syrup, poke root tincture, astragulus tincture, Pau D'arco tea on occassion, Mitake mushroon decoction (and soups I made myself), I believe the list goes on.
Things came and went. I remained constant with most things esp the antioxidants, but I would follow my intuition as well. While sitting in chemo awaking from the benadryll stupor "Chlorophyll" flashed in front of my eyes, so I went and bought some. As it turned out I had been slightly anemic for a while (refused the shot the onc wanted me to take - nuelasta) chlorophyll is identical to hemoglobin with the exception of the Iron molecule, Magnesium is at the center of its world.
Anyhoo. I also try to stay away from sugar, meat, dairy. Sometimes I am more successful than others. Xocolate has been an essential on this journey (and unsweetened isn't nearly as wonderful).
Wishing you the best. I say read the alternative literature and then feel what your body wants or needs. I have dropped some suppliments for a while and returned to them later, it is a fluid thing I am coming to understand. Hope this helps.
Cheerio and blessings to you on your path of self discovery. -
Thanks very much and very good luck to you on this jorney.

peregrine,
Where are you finding the best avenues of research? I too am interested in the alternative route. I have finished ac, radiation and stage 1 of reconstruction. I have chosen not to take any of the hormonal 's even though I was ER positive. so I am looking for prevention. One of my questions is how long should we continue with curcumin, tumeric etc. I can find no definitive answers and do not want to take a zillion things not needed. Have you had a a blood test to find any deficincies? Just curious about your path. Thanks for sharing your story-- it is very inspiring. I have no doubt that your alternative approach had made the difference!

Hey mjc,
My apologies for being so long in reply I am not on very much. Anyhoo...My sister is a master herbalist (thank goodness) and I have had some training in herbs as well. There are a few good books out there written by ND and cancer survivors. Unfortunately I have read them long ago and don't exactly remember the titles. I believe one was called "Alternative Therapies for Cancer Treatment". That went thru some clinical trials on green tea extract, curcumin, Vit C etc. a really good resource. I haven't done any blood tests (I have requested them from the docs to no avail). When speaking with a malig. melanoma survivor (stage 4), she stated to me that she never considers herself fully healed and still takes a regimen of pills to prove it. She healed herself of it (had spread to 4 organs western medicine opened her up saw what was within closed her up and said get your affairs in order). She went organic. Utilized essiac tea (still does) and loads of other things. I generally know when my body has had enought of whatever, I start gagging when I am to take the pills. You can learn muscle testing techniques as well to aid in the process of usage or elimination of herbs and vitamins. kinesiologists use muscle testing all the time.
I hope this helps. I know it is a bit vague. I had my second surgery last month and went against their wishes. I had them take what they needed and reduce both sides (not doing the mastectomy). They found no evidence of cancer in the breast, but did find 3 nodes of 9 under the arm the largest of the three being .45 cm. the Surgeon said these nodes were within the scar tissue of the first surgery. I wasn't surprised by that as scar tissue is so dense and pervasive it restricts a lot of things and, I believe, nutrient/chemo into and out of the area as well.
Stay well and positive. Do not "own" this cancer, it is foreign and not of you- simply an invader.
All my best
